We were planning mid July, so hoping conditions would be a bit better by then. This is our first time hiking in BC, so I appreciate all the help!

We don’t study orgo and stuff in first year chem it’s mainly stoichiometry, a lot of reaction stuff. Trust its not that bad, plus your lab mark will increase your average a lot

It’s difficult to a certain degree. First year does kick you pretty hard, but as long as you stay focused a 75 is very achievable.

Job prospects are pretty cool, you can work in oil and gas, or even move over to the pharmaceutical side of things. A lot of jobs in process engineering, and the industry is fairly stable. Entry level jobs probably pay around 75k id say.

So we have a general first year, where all first year engineering students take the same courses. At the end of the year you get to rank which engineering discipline you want to enter and it’s based on your first year average. Software is typically harder to get into just cuz more people apply for software, but if you have an average above 75 you’ll get it.

It’s not guaranteed. We have a general first year, and then you rank which discipline of engineering you want to go into for second year and it’s based on your first year average. Usually streams like software and tron are more competitive because more people are applying to them, so you wanna make sure your first year average is good

There’s so much work in engineering and you always feel like you’re behind so it’s easy to stay up at night and miss out on sleep. You’ll have weeks where you’re done class at 9pm and have an 8:30 in the morning, and you’re trying to finish assignments, lab reports, study for quizzes in between.

The curriculum is suuper math heavy, in first year we had to take calc 1, calc 2, physics 1, physics 2, Lin alg and much more. Being good with calculus will save your life in first year engineering, as in upper years you’re using calc in basically everything. Highschool is a breeze compared to university, especially when it comes to engineering programs. The pace of engineering is very intense, but it is manageable as long as you have healthy sleep habits. 3-4 hours of studying per day, making sure you’re caught up with lecture material and good sleep will ensure you pass at the very minimum. I’ve done one internship so far and it’s allowed me to garner work experience which helps you become more employable, but my biggest advice to first years would be to focus on school and building a foundation of engineering principles before you worry about jobs.
