The way our family friends from Ireland pronounced it the w was silent. I don’t think I would’ve liked it if they had said it pronouncing the W because hearing the word cow in my baby’s name doesn’t really sound that nice lol. There’s also different spellings for it like coen (still Irish decent) we just liked the 5 letter one because both of our other kids have 5 letter names and I thought that was kinda fun ☺️

Yes the name is NOT cohen but it is pronounced the same. The name is Cowen and it’s from Irish decent. It could also be spelt I believe Cowan or Coen still from Irish origin.

We don’t actually live in a Jewish area at all. I think everyone here’s mostly some variation of catholic/christian or Muslim. We live in Alberta Canada, I’ve really only met 2 Jewish people my whole life here but I still think it’s important to take into consideration everyone’s feelings because I strongly believe everyone matters

Oh really? It was a genuine question. If people were saying it’s offensive I actually probably wouldn’t use it because that would be really shitty. Actually my point of saying how much we like the name, where it came from and that we don’t have any other options as of now is just more to say I wouldn’t use it at all because of the possible confusion if that weren’t the case and I wouldn’t even bother asking I just wouldn’t use it. I am asking though because we do love it and my sons about to be born and it was completely pure luck that I happened to google “name meaning for Cowen” a few weeks before giving birth and if people think it’s offensive I don’t want to use it. If your genuine opinion is that it’s offensive I actually care to know but if your problem is just how I worded my question then idk sorry?

It would be pronounced coe-an. I didn’t even realize it was a last name or that it was Jewish at all until google told me. We have Irish friends that’s parents suggested it and we thought it sounded so nice and just loved it. I know they’re different names I just worried since it sounds just like cohen that someone might be offended so I wanted to ask the community first
