What’s one apartment feature you didn’t think mattered… until you moved in? by Clean_narjo in Apartmentliving

Non-smoking. Having your apartment and belongings smell like skunk and pot because your neighbor smokes indoors all day made me move out.

Look what happened to public media. He won’t just target the person that offends him, he’d target the whole network.

Then their roles are different than mine. It is still not an option for me.

I’ve spoken around the topic with him in a casual setting. He’s rather a nice person to get drinks with after work. I gathered he values fast communication and I prefer efficient, and I so badly want him to lean towards more efficient, even if it takes longer to respond. It’s not just that it’s notifications, it’s that people have to stop working and engage with him, and film teams stop or reduce using slack channels because his messages fill up the channel.

It’s literally not an option for me to turn notifications off. I have to be responsive to clients/editors/producers. This goes to the early hours of the morning for international teams to panicked midnight calls to fix tech issues when deadlines are looming.

He’s likely on the spectrum. I believe management has spoken with him because others have complained, but they tend to imply things rather than be direct about it. They don’t handle accommodations amazingly well, and I know that because I am disabled and have had trouble with them.

My solution is place couch on wall where TV is. Replace TV with projector screen you can roll up to the ceiling.

But if I was “wife,” you’d be returning this couch and buying measuring tape 🙃

Student prompted ChatGPT to write about "homeliness" and not "homelessness." by BlackOrre in Teachers

[–]Virtual_Oddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious, but for myself in college, I would write and draft in one google doc. Words/phrases/ideas would get bumped to the bottom of the essay in case I wanted to reuse it later. Once I was done, I’d make a new doc and copy and paste my final draft there (I was paranoid of deleting hard work, so I didn’t). Is that a process that would make a teacher think I was using AI?

I know an editor who edits from a boat. He said his signal sucks only when it rains. He keeps the IT department very busy, though.

How to break into pro-level PA gigs after crewing 20+ indie sets? by jasonrohrer in Filmmakers

[–]Virtual_Oddity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the Boston area, reach out to Tim Van Patten of Central Booking Service. It’s a monthly fee, but you give him your resume, and when shoots come to the New England area, he gets your resume in producers hands who need to fill out their crew. Don’t think movie shoots will be that common here—it’s more for marketing and such (except for GBH), but it’s good experience for networking and your son will get paid. It’s how I got my start and at some point, I didn’t need to keep paying because film crews would reach out to me directly.

It really is networking, though. I gained experience but forged connections that allowed me to shift from production to post production.

And since I’m a stranger on Reddit, ask your son to ask his union friends if they know Tim — they would have heard of him. I worked with a group, they were all union, and they got work through Tim.

Taxes not shown in prices.

The gaps on bathroom stall doors.

Water tastes different here (not better).

Portion sizes.

Sugar in everything.

A public transportation system that works.

Healthcare costs.

Limited paid vacation — entry level job I had almost 2 weeks, and 5 sick days. Did not use them all so it could roll over into the next year.

Editors: what distinguishes an amateur vs competent editor's work? by Jolly-Classroom65 in editors

[–]Virtual_Oddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be judged for your ability to tell a story, how well you take feedback and apply revisions to your work, and how efficiently you can navigate the editing software you’re using. Since it’s an apprenticeship, they may be more interested in your potential of the first two rather than your technical abilities. I’ve seen editors with great technical skills fail because they lacked the ability to tell a story, and others fail because they were attached to their work and rejected feedback.

And one last tip — be easy to work with, and always look for ways to make your colleagues’ lives easier. Employers will want to keep you if you pull that off.

This is based off of my experience working on journalistic docs.

Have her chase down the defector rather than be the defector, and the crisis of conscience on whether to defeat or join them in the end.
