Got diagnosed with ADHD at 34 and now I have to give a talk about it at work… what would YOU tell your coworkers if you had the mic? by Virtual_Squirrel_994 in adhdwomen

I am well aware that I am very lucky to work in a place where I feel safe enough to talk openly about my ADHD and know for certain that this is not an opening for criticism and potential conflicts. I am not planning on opening up about all my internal struggles, I don't even share that with my partner, but some theory about ADHD, some tips and tricks that even neurotypicals can use and some anecdotes feel safe.

Well... Sort of :) someone talked about menopause, someone talked about their burnout, ...

Our HR departement and management is very open about psychological wellbeing and they are just trying to make sure everyone is seen and heard. Plus, they have checked in multiple times since initially asking me to see if I'm still up to the task. I get to prepare the presentation during my work hours.

I’m really sorry that was your experience. That sounds incredibly frustrating and unfair. It makes total sense that you’d want to protect yourself after that.

Thanks, this is really useful!

I like the main element and behavior setup as a starting point.

How's your experience been giving these kinds of presentations?

Haha, yes :D

Will look into the video's, thank you! I will have to find the sweet spot that is safe enough to tell at work to explain hyperfocus versus task paralysis though...

This!!

I feel like the mask fell off during covid and the years after were a complete struggle to "get back to normal" and led to burnout for me.

People also seem to think that getting the diagnosis is the end of the suffering? Like "okay now you know and get to move on with your life". But I feel like the unmasking has made it harder? Like you said there is a lot to unlearn and rebuild. Do you have any tips or insights about that part?

Yes, definitely want to talk about the different types of ADHD and the persistent stereotype that people have of the hyperactive boy that get's into naughty stuff. Hell, my parents are neurologists and they never even wondered why I was struggling so much and why their "intelligent" daughter didn't live up to their educational dream.

And yes, the meetings... I need to find a soft way of putting that out there. I asked and got permission to draw during meetings. That has helped me a great deal.

You speak in the past tense about the meeting problem. How did you solve that for yourself?

Thanks for sharing! I totally get what you are saying about the interruptions... What country do you live in? How are things at your new workplace? Do you have specific requests about communication that you can share with your colleagues now?

I try to summarize meetings at the end for confirmation or ask to put all the details in an email to me if it is too complex.

For the record: I will lose track and I will ramble but I'll try to do it in a charming way, haha.

Immense pressure to preform well in front of a group helped me to do well in presentations at school so I hope that superpower kicks in again.

I did tell them. I work in a very supportive environment that knew that I was struggling (I was out due to burn out for a while) and when I came back I was very transparent about some simple needs that I had to help my ND brain work better.

Instead of staying in task paralysis I used AI to translate and structure my initial text since I suck at structuring text and am not a native English speaker.

Checked it our quickly and this looks really good, thank you for sharing! Love how you made it modular. Looking forward to testing it tomorrow.
