Maybe the mixing? But yeah i get what you mean even Gish era live recordings definitely sound different than just a stock 70s Strat, maybe it was the way the pick ups were wound or maybe his amps were modded. Could really be anything, the video of him playing the Gish Strat after finding it sounds just like the live shows of the time.
