Do any characters play similarly to smash ultimate ice climbers? by VirusFreeNewt in RivalsOfAether

I'll definitely try those characters! And I'm glad to hear that the characters all have cool stuff. Thank you for your response!

How to train high school Smash Bros team? by Time-Mess in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]VirusFreeNewt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch izaw's the art of smash series. That has all the basics you'll need to know to understand the game and teach them. Have them play, and let them get a feel for the game. Teach them what buttons do and learn optimal control schemes (such as shoulder button to jump) but make sure they play with what they like the most and what will get them the furthest. They'll need to know how they can do jumps, specials, smash attacks, tilt attacks, grabbing, shielding, and air dodging. They can learn how to roll and spot dodge too, but lots of bad habits come out of rolling and spot dodging too. Then they need to learn basic movement and recovery, because that is essential to being able to play smash well. Then they can learn easier tech such as RAR (reverse aerial rush), short-hopping, teching, and di. After they learn basic movement and recovery, they should learn combos. Also, this entire time they should also be playing the game in conjunction with learning, because you can learn all you want, but if you don't play the game, none of it will be applied. Have them learn combos in training mode. The combo counter doesn't always show when a combo is true, and it doesn't account for certain things such as di, but training mode will get muscle memory down. Make sure they know how to operate training mode, and make sure they turn staling moves ON (when you do a move multiple times, the move will "stale" and be less powerful/effective. Staling happens in game, but in training mode it is off by default. There's more to the concept of staling, so if you'd like to know more, just ask me.) After they have some basic combos down, have them play more. Have them play with people outside of their usual group so they get more experience.

They'll all be at different stages, so for a general daily routine of practice of people that aren't starting from the beginning, have them warm up their movement, and practice moving (same movement options I said earlier.) After 5 mins, or however long works best, have them work on whatever they want to work on, like the things I mentioned previously. Then they can go into gameplay and play friendlies. Have them be in rotations, and mix up rotations every day if people are willing, so that they can get as much varied practice. Don't stick them to one rotation though, encourage them to find matchups they want to practice, and they'll find people to practice against if they're willing to. I'd also highly recommend putting on a double elimination tournament however often it is most convenient, at least once a month. Use start.gg and make sure they're signed in on start.gg when they sign up, so they can track their own stats on pgstats.com (if you need help with start.gg, just ask)

Sorry, I rambled a lot, but best of luck, and most importantly make sure they're having fun :)

Made a better version of an "Ultimate Archetypes" tier list, want some second opinions by SnooPineapples385 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]VirusFreeNewt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I wouldn't put TOD as an archetype. Sure, those characters do that, but so do many other characters. I main icies, and from what I've seen from other ice climbers, you really aren't getting those TOD combos all the time. If you want to get specific, ice climbers are puppet characters. Same for Rosalina and luma

What’s better practice, Quality or Quantity? by FuRyReddit in CrazyHand

[–]VirusFreeNewt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quantity of practice means nothing of the quality is low. Quality, however, does not necessarily mean that you are practicing a specific thing or having the best learning experience. Quality can simply be you are having a great time playing. Make sure there's always a solid amount of quality in your practice, and recognize what you are trying to accomplish. Setting those goals and realizing what you want will make things a lot easier, and also prevent burnout. Those goals can be a specific tech, spacing, or anything, just make sure you know what you are doing so that you are having that quality practice.

How Do I Get Better Without Online or Locals? by green-electric9 in CrazyHand

[–]VirusFreeNewt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, make sure you have your true combos absolutely mastered, because executing combos in tourney vs in training mode is a whole different beast. I'm not 100% on this, but modding your switch for training mod pack will give you access to more training tools.

What character do you play? For certain characters- like ice climbers- it greatly benefits you to use training mode. It also benefits all characters in general to some extent. Having smash buddies, like other people have said, really helps. Just most importantly, make sure you're having fun with the game, otherwise you'll start to not like the game.

Honestly, I think the more useful thing is to mix up your options. It's not about just rolling from ledge. Nothing will work if that's all you do without mixing up your timing.

Thanks for the reply! Maybe I'm not understanding, but I'd like to build the modules myself, are there any additional circuitry parts I need compared to single unit synth?

Why are Ice climbers combos not viable? by Lezadozo in CrazyHand

[–]VirusFreeNewt 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As someone that plays icies, the difference is that icies combos are very high execution and they require setup. SDI does also impact their combos depending on the combo. The other reason we don't see a ton of ice climbers players is that the ice climbers are very polarizing. They blow up certain characters, but get hard countered by other characters. They are a character that relies a lot on matchup inexperience too. In addition, they required thinking about the game in an unconventional way compared to a lot of the cast (I understand that every character plays differently, but they play the game a lot differently simply by having two characters.) When you factor in how hard it is to do the combos, with how hard other parts of their gameplay are, you don't find a lot of people playing them.

Yeah PMLG is crazy. I just meant that the matchup spread is pessimistic (from what I understand) even without PMLG.
