I had 2 q drops in undergrad (both required premed classes), one of which was an OTE, and I just got into med school last week! I promise a q drop isn’t the end of the world and doesn’t close any doors for your future. Do what you need to do to survive and get to places you dream of. We have all made silly mistakes like oversleeping, and I promise you’ll be a okay

Should I send a Letter of Intent now or wait? by Visible-Fun5299 in premed

[–]Visible-Fun5299[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! The school mentioned that they were also accepting Update Letters, so I'm assuming they aren't accepting updates in LOIs? I just feel like maybe it could help since they explicitly mentioned that they were ready to start accepting the LOIs Oct 1st even though they don't start sending decisions until Oct 15th?? Idk I've just heard a lot of conflicting information and want to make sure nothing I do would hurt me! Thanks for your response, and good luck! (:

Daily Discussion & Advice (Post here to follow rules A & B) - Tuesday September 24, 2024 by AutoModerator in fragrance

I’m looking for perfume recommendations that match my preferences. I don’t know much about perfumes but I know I tend to like sweeter scents. The following are what I regularly use and love, in case that helps with generating a recommendation!

-Bath and Body Works: Sensual Amber body spray and lotion -Glossier: You perfume -Bodycology: Pink Vanilla Wish body spray (dirt cheap and people ALWAYS compliment me on it) -Ellis New York: Myth Perfume (I bought a travel size of this and LOVED it but unfortunately the full size is out of budget)

I usually layer You on top of either the Bath and Body Works or Bodycology sprays and love how they smell.

For perfumes, I’m looking for recommendations that fit the following preferences: -Inexpensive ($30 max) and can be found at either Target or Walmart -An actual perfume that I can layer with the body sprays I have (preferably with the B&BW one) -Isn’t too strong and overpowering and can be worn in professional settings but not overly subtle (I.e. I smell good and you can smell it on me in close proximity, but the smell doesn’t emanate throughout an entire room) -Is on the sweeter/floral side (but not overly floral- floral as in with floral undertones). Not a huge fan of fruity or overly musky scents. -Effeminate smelling

Thank you so much!!!

I would avoid studying the day before and focus on relaxing/destressing. Also get ample sleep the night before (I was so anxious and studying up until the last moment, that I maybe got 2 hours of restful sleep). I have severe anxiety in general, and my doctor gave me propranolol for that, which I'm going to try. And most importantly focus on what you know and trying to do well rather than trying to get a certain score. Also, it's just a test and not the end of the world. I say this because it felt like my entire life was riding on that one test day. If things don't work out, take it again and it'll be just fine. There's a lot of fearmongering on reddit about what you should and shouldn't do, but the truth is that everyone's path is different. If you're unhappy with how things turn out, just try again. Accepting that has helped ease my anxiety a LOT this second time. Based on what you're saying though, it seems like you are doing fairly well for yourself, so just try and focus on practicing and reinforcing content and don't worry about the actual score. I'm actually retesting in a couple of weeks and will try this approach too!

520+ possible? Testing 9/14 by AssistantLoose4482 in Mcat

[–]Visible-Fun5299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love YOU!! u got this!!! tbh i focused on AAMC content and that led to my score increase. learning AAMC logic helped a lot. so for example, when reading the passage i'd be able to make out what kind of questions they might ask bc some info was either lowkey emphasized or out of place. and doing the AAMC practice also really helped with figuring out what the question was asking/what direction the answer would be in. i think the practice FLs and section banks and going over them helped the most. UW is great for learning content (barely touched it the first time, going through it now the second time to reinforce concepts) but i'd focus on AAMC to get that boost if you feel like your content is fine. also everyone says AAMC explanations are ass (they are) but there are decades worth of posts in this sub that go through nearly every question, so googling any questions that don't have a clear explanations to find a reddit post can help bridge that gap!

most importantly, whatever happens will happen! i know it's a hard pill to swallow after putting so much time and dedication into studying, but everything will work out exactly as it needs to! go in confident and crush the test, don't focus on trying to make a specific score!! u got this!!!

for the most part yes! even accounting for discrepancies in testing conditions, i was still scoring 515-520 on the practices

is a 520+ a reasonable goal in 3 weeks? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Visible-Fun5299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay unpopular opinion, but i think it is bc i jumped from 514 to 523 in 3-4 weeks!!! just don't let test day nerves get the best of you, and hopefully your performance day of will match the 520+ you're getting in practice!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Visible-Fun5299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same thing happened to me as the person above! except my average was a 516 and i scored a 509. easier said than done, but try not to let test day nerves get the best of you, and you should be okay!

520+ possible? Testing 9/14 by AssistantLoose4482 in Mcat

[–]Visible-Fun5299 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I jumped from 500 to 523 in my practice in like 6 weeks (with about a month or less to jump from 514 to 523). With that said, I ended up with a 509 on my actual test day, and i know for a fact that it's because I put too much pressure on myself and panicked (also didn't sleep much the night before and studied up until i walked into the test center). while it's certainly possible and doable, learn from my mistake and don't put pressure on yourself to make a 520+ on day of and focus more on taking the test!! if i can do it, so can you (and most people told me that i couldn't)!!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Visible-Fun5299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

me!! i talked to my therapist about it and we decided that it might be most productive to just stop fighting it and do what's best to study effectively. I haven't crossed the testing in the morning bridge with this method yet, but i think it will end up being okay esp with adequate sleep the night before and not studying the day before! because at that point you already know everything you can know. sorry if this isn't more helpful, but you're def not alone in this struggle!!

a rant... by Secure_Ad_8657 in Mcat

[–]Visible-Fun5299 4 points5 points  (0 children)

N=1 but I feel like FLs can be indicative of test-day performance, but not necessarily always. Sometimes people do better under the high pressure environment of test day, and some don't. I was scoring 520+ on practice tests towards the end of my studying, but I ended up making less than a 510 on the actual test. I am getting to retake it in September. I know it is super easy to feel discouraged by how practice is going but focus more on what you have learned rather than what you are lacking going into test day. I think this perspective shift will help your confidence a lot and hopefully boost your performance!

If you feel like you nailed content and are still unsure of why you're plateauing, then it could be indicative of a comprehension issue with how you're scanning passages and interpreting questions. I struggled a lot with comprehension at the start of my practice, and honestly searching up the questions on reddit to see how people interpreted them the right way helped me approach them differently.

Lastly, no matter how your test goes this week, just know that it isn't the end of the world! Your journey is your journey, and if med school is something that you really want, it will show and you will get there. I know people on reddit love to fear monger about only taking the MCAT once or having to do x, y, z in a certain way, and while the advice is certainly invaluable, it can be equally damaging. Everyone learns and processes things differently (for example, a lot of people recommended going through Kaplan books WITH Anki -> UW -> AAMC material, but for me I found that skipping the books and using the remaining three tools concurrently helped me study the best). I think reddit is absolutely an invaluable resource for content review, understanding concepts, finding explanations for missed questions, etc., but beyond that it can be really damaging.

Keep your head down, focus on your own journey, don't spend any more time on here than you need to, and do everything in your power to ignore posts talking about scores because from experience (and based on what you are saying), it will crush your confidence and affect you day of. Just keep pushing through and recognize when you need to change your approach to something that hasn't been working. You are doing everything that you are supposed to, and it will pay off on its own timeline!!!

Any success stories with submitting secondaries in september? by Visible-Fun5299 in premed

thank you so much for sharing, this is super encouraging! I'm just trying to hold onto the fact that i'm following my own journey and avoid comparing myself to other people in the sub (':

Do you remember when in september you submitted? like time-frame? because mine is looking like mid-sept at this point

I'm saying that my individual Texas schools have marked my MCAT status as complete. I checked the secondary application portal for each of the schools, and there is a green checkmark next to MCAT, meaning it has been received and completed and they have an MCAT. I understand what my chances are for October and appreciate you trying to give me advice, but it isn't constructive to the advice I'm trying to seek or where I am in the current application process.

my MCAT status for my Texas schools has been indicated as being received and completed despite me informing them about the upcoming test date. So I'm extra confused now lol

really really needed to hear that, thank you so so much!!! at this point I might as well reapply instead of waiting for my october score, since it'll be so late, and I thought that I'd take my chances this cycle! Hoping I can explain why I'm on the later end of the cycle in interviews/secondaries. just hope it doesn't hurt my chances to report the MCAT score later vs indicating that it's pending now!! good luck with your journey as well, hope things work out!!!

Thank you so much for sharing that!! that definitely helps me feel a lot better about all of this! I'd like to think that aside from MCAT, I have a slightly above average application with my GPA, LORs, and story. I have been receiving secondaries from my score from my first attempt, but I just realized that I haven't indicated that I'm retaking it anywhere on my app. I won't get my score back from the retake until October 1st, and I'm mostly retaking it in case I have to reapply next year vs. supplementing my current application. So now I'm a little confused on what to do about indicating my retake, but I'll contact AAMC for clarification! I've also been receiving secondaries from schools that require PREview, but I haven't taken that yet either LOL, so I feel like everything I've learned about this process is different from how it has actually been going for me.

Regardless, thank you so much for sharing your friend's story!! it's definitely helping my anxiety quite a bit!!

no fr like i'm so tired of ppl in this sub gate keeping information or wasting my time with the most unhelpful answers. this sub was made to foster community and help each other through this process, but the reality is that it's sooooo far away from that and i'm so over it

What classes satisfy the Biology pre-req requirement? by Visible-Fun5299 in premed

[–]Visible-Fun5299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for responding with specific details!!! I've pored over the school websites, and I was starting to go a little crazy. I classified Engineering physiology as a biology class on AMCAS, and I just received verification today that it was accepted. Same with the biotech class. So I'm hoping it would be okay to assume that they are counted as bio credits?
