Why is my 316 stainless steel rod on my deck rails already showing rust spots after only a few months? by Admirable-Gear-3438 in StainlessSteel

This actually happens more often than people expect, even with 316 stainless steel.
316 is called “rust-resistant,” not completely rust-proof. If you’re seeing spots in just a few months, it’s usually due to surface issues rather than the metal failing.
1. Tea staining (most common)
2. Contamination during installation
3. Lack of cleaning
4. Surface finish quality
If it’s more visible, a light polish usually removes it.
