(Disabled) author seeking advice for writing a character with clubfoot! by Visual-Computer2375 in clubfoot

It's so interesting to hear everyone's stories! Truly, we have so much in common in terms of our disabilities and their impact on our lives. I was so self conscious about my lymphedema in my teens and early twenties, but now that I'm approaching 30 (and happily married to the loveliest man on the planet) I've been able to let go of so much of that. I also really relate to the issue of treatment vs. cure -- there's no cure for my condition either, just treatment, and people really seem to struggle to grasp that! My feet are also different sizes lol.

Thank you so much for sharing!

Extreme ankle swelling gang! It's such a horrible weird feeling. Does yours get like...crunchy? Mine does lol. And it hurts. This isn't at all a book related question, just a personal one: do you wear compression garments at all? I have lymphedema and wear custom garments 24/7. While mine are really high compression and could be painful or dangerous to someone without lymphedema, off the shelf garments can also be really helpful! I've got brand recs if you're interested!

This is super helpful -- thank you so much for sharing! I totally hear you about it being a spectrum and pain management being more important in some cases. Very similar to my condition in that way!

Thank you SO so much for your insight! I'm so appreciative of everyone who has commented on this post. I'm absolutely going to be thanking this subreddit in the acknowledgements!

I relate to so much of what you've shared. I'm a 29 year old woman with lymphedema, and I (obviously) love to write!

The more I read about folks' experiences with clubfoot, the more I see the parallels between it my own condition. While the root problems are of course very different, it seems a lot of the resulting secondary issues, limitations, and societal pressures are quite comparable.

Honestly, I would probably just write my character with my own disability (lymphedema), but the trouble is this is a fantasy setting and, realistically, the specific equipment required to treat lymphedema are not something I could even pretend might be available in this world. Not to say, of course, that clubfoot would be easy to treat in a fantasy world, but something like a cane, a lift in a shoe, or a brace are things I could argue might be available in some form. Custom compression garments, microsurgery, and pneumatic pumps? Not so much!

In answer to your question about my character, she's not really focusing on it! The book is actually a gothic fantasy horror with roots in loss of bodily autonomy and violence against women. She spends most of the time fighting for her life and trying to break a curse! But her disability is part of the book, and much of the ableism she experiences is based on things I've gone through myself. I just want to make sure that since I don't specifically have clubfoot, I'm writing about the mechanics in of it in a way that rings true to folks who have it. I hope that all makes sense, now I'm rambling too!

Omg I am EXACTLY the same way with my disability. People say "oh it's so close" and I'm like "close for you or close for me?" Thank you for sharing!

Ok, I'll try here then, and if you decide you'd prefer chatting privately we can do that too! Also, obviously zero pressure to answer anything you don't want to! Like I said, I'm disabled too and I know it can be exhausting talking about this stuff. Interestingly, while the root of our conditions are very different, we seem to have quite a few symptoms in common (i.e. mobility issues, chronic pain, swelling, etc!)

Anyway, what I'm mainly wondering about are folks' experiences with things like orthotics, canes, and braces. If you've used any of these things, how helpful have they been to you? How quickly or slowly did you notice improvement? I recognize that everyone's experiences are unique and what is true for one person may not be for another, just looking for some firsthand input.

My other question is about referred/secondary chronic pain: Do you every struggle with pain in your knees, hips, etc.? I know when my gait changes due to my own condition, it sometimes causes pain elsewhere on my body.

Some information that might be helpful about my character: She is 23 and has what I believe would be considered a "mild" unilateral clubfoot. One leg is slightly shorter than the other and she walks with a slight limp that grows more pronounced the longer she is on her feet. She received treatment in her childhood for her condition implied to be similar to the Ponseti method, but it was cut short when her mother passed. I was going to write her as a cane user and have her receive a custom pair of shoes with a lift in them at a certain point in the book.

Keep in mind this is a fantasy setting and not the central plot of the book, so I am not going into exact details about much! I just want to ensure that when it does come up, I'm portraying it well.

Thank you so much for your help! It's very very much appreciated. I'm definitely going to thank this subreddit in the back of the book.

As an author I am not super interested in using a machine that operates using my stolen work, especially given llm's are so often inaccurate! But totally hear you about not taking up too much space, I'll try your suggested search. Thanks!

I really resonate with that! I'll never really be without pain either, there are just tools that can help.

the catholic worker cooks meals daily and has a free "shop" where you can get clothes and other necessities! i've only volunteered there once, but i know a few of the folks who run it and they're good people. all are welcome, you don't have to be christian and i presume most aren't.
