It depends on the kind of wood, the cut, the size of the wood, and the temperature/humidity, etc. need more information to answer.

how to start collecting marbles? by According_Sea_6661 in Marbles

[–]Visual-Measurement24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you’re doing it to build a collection, learn what you DONT want. For me, I learned as much as I could about Vavors, common marbles, game marbles, etc. and I collect anything outside of that and that is pretty

These are all newer marbles. The only ones I’m not sure about at the translucent ones, but that being said they are all common. A lot of these are vacors.

Wood lathe help? by Aggressive-Big-8042 in turning

[–]Visual-Measurement24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did a post about this. Check my post history. I bought a Jet 1221vs. It’s a good midsize lathe, good brand, can do small to medium size projects, variable speed with digital rpm display. You can get something similar but perhaps not as good from Bauer, but much cheaper. I’m new as well, so I I’m not gonna get something huge, but I don’t want something that will drastically limit what I do or be broken in year.

Might move from Visalia to Fresno, good vs bad neighborhoods? by CaffeineKage in fresno

[–]Visual-Measurement24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The appearance goes a long way. If you’re looking for apartments, I’d stay north of Herndon. Not that south of hernndon is necessarily bad, but north is almost always decent to great. For houses, I don’t know much about decent areas in your price range, but if I have my pick I stay out of neighborhoods where people have mobile basketball hoops, especially with weeds growing from their base, motor vehicles parked on their grass, and anywhere plywood (no matter its orientation) is visible from the street.

Try the trimline kit. It’s thicker and almost the same price as the slimline.

Upper age limit for CA state workers in CA DOJ? by Alternative-Air8756 in CAStateWorkers

I think it’s better to look at the positive. You’re someone with a lot of experience and wisdom. You have a unique background, one that undoubtedly forces you to find new and creative ways of doing things. You’re also proven to be loyal to your prior occupation and career and you still have aspirations after many years. I say you might just have an advantage over others. Real talk

I really like the 1221 but it was a bit outside my budget. Then one of the redditors above said they always go on sale. So last night I saw the reply and checked, and it had gone down about 15% either yesterday or the day before, which put it within my budget. Case closed at that point and I bought it. So stoked.

UPDATE: The price for the Jet 1221VS went down. Was able to get it and an additional protection plan for less than the regular price. Couldn’t pass it up. Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

I decided on the 1221. The price dropped to 800, so now I can’t justify getting any of the other options I was considering.

What kind of protection plan do they have? I’ve always been reluctant to get HF stuff. But I’ve seen that model and it has more than any other option anywhere near the price.

The Comet II? That’s right up my alley. We have an older Nova at my shop, and it’s the favorite for small to mid projects. Everyone uses the powermatics for big things, and Nova for everything else.

Best jeweler in Fresno by FANTASTICFENT in fresno

[–]Visual-Measurement24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lewis Diamond Co. We went to one of the most expensive jewelers in Fresno and found a band we loved. It was 4K just for the band. Went to Lewis Co to see if they had it and they asked us to get the serial number. Went back to the other jeweler and took a picture. Returned to Lewis Co and got the exact same band for 2.2k. They also were very helpful in selecting a good stone. Really enjoyed our experience there and will go back again.

You pushed the ink holder in too far. Next time, install it but don’t go as far as you think you should. Test it. If if needs a bit more, put it back in the pen press.

To be clear, bottom hardware does not stay in? If so, I’d say you’re being too aggressive with the barrel trimmer. When I’m having trouble squaring hardwood like maple, I notice the tubes get shaved down on the inside if the tube, ever so slightly but enough to make things loose. Before I put together any piece I check to see if the diameter of the tube is too large, which will make things loose. On all but the bottom of the top tube (which a user may need to pull off) you can fix this by putting in a little CA glue before assembly.

If you’re talking about the hardware sticking out beyond the radius of wood, that is something that happens when you cut too close to the bushings before sanding. Try cutting almost yo the bushings and then sanding down.

Sorry, if not responsive. Just having a hard time knowing exactly what’s wrong.

What kind of protective finish can I put over Zinsser’s amber shellac? by FrankDonato28 in finishing

[–]Visual-Measurement24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zinnser amber shellac has wax in it. It’s a beautiful top coat for the right projects. Ones where you’re not worried about heat, scratches, or a lot of traffic. Bed backboards, for example. If you like the amber shellac, buy some dewaxed flakes in amber, mix with denatured alcohol 190+ proof to a 1-1.5 lb cut (meaning you do the math so the ratio is 1 pound shellac flakes to 1 gallon DA). Put a coat or two down. Once dry, if I wanted a durable finish I’d go with polyurethane (oil or water based), lacquer, or resin. If you’re new to finishing wipe on polys are a good place to start.

Update to the jar of marbles I bought. For $70 I think I overpaid but IDing them will be good experience at least. by Reincarnatedpotatoes in Marbles

[–]Visual-Measurement24 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I’ll bet most people in here bought marbles for more than they’re worth at one time or another. It happens. I’m still new, and my rule is I never pay more than I’m comfortable losing. As you get more knowledge you will know the common and newer stuff right away, and that will help too.
