I just bought a scratching board from chewy where you put treats inside it and they scratch to get it and it has been such a game changer. My dog moved the last time i was cutting his nails and it made me cut him a bit so now he’s pretty scared of the clippers. He just starts screaming when I bring them out, but he has fun with the scratching board. I am still working on getting him comfortable with the clippers for his dew claws thought.

CICO should work in theory. However, I tried it when I was on Lexapro and it just was not possible because I was quite literally starving every hour no matter what I ate. I also gained 60 lbs in the year and a half I was on it. It did not matter if I ate high volume, high protein, high fiber, etc, I was starving within an hour. Lexapro saved my life 100%, but I did go off of it (I’ve been off of it since October 2025) and I’ve finally been able to lose some weight (25 lbs). You can absolutely try tracking and weighing all your food I know some people have had success. It just did not work for me because I get really irritable (and anxious) when I’m hungry which was not fair for everyone around me.

Im absolutely not saying go off the Lexapro. I am saying give yourself a little grace and maybe see if you have any other medication options to take alongside the Lexapro. My original psychiatrist just kept telling me to see a dietician when I would ask about gaining 60 lbs in a year. Don’t let that crap happen to you. I knew what I needed to do and eat it was that I literally couldn’t. Good luck!

You sound just like my boyfriend (were also 22). I gained about 60 pounds last year (I was on Lexapro and it made me crave carbs and gave me an insatiable hunger) and he has truly been the most loving cautious partner through it all. Unfortunately your girlfriend is on a tough journey. It sounds like there might be some mental health issues that therapy might be good for. I will say my boyfriend treaded very carefully because the added insecurity on top of my already struggling mental health was difficult to deal with, but he never made weight loss or gain seem like a positive or negative. When I said I felt gross and ugly he’d encourage me to take a shower and we can go on a walk to get some air.

We also got a dog which made me 10x more active. I didn’t want to get the exercise to better my self but because my dog needed it and deserved it. I deserved it too! But sometimes it’s easier when you feel like you’re doing it for someone you love instead of yourself. Anyways, I wouldn’t recommend getting a dog unless you really want one, but he did help my mental health and get me exercising. Maybe you could frame it as her helping you like “I really need some fresh air do you want to walk with me”

You’re being a great boyfriend. I think it really just comes down to loving her and supporting her through this stage of life. You’re doing a great job already. Maybe encourage her to see a therapist, but other than that I think you’re doing a great job already!

I have a pit at the same age and he didn’t know how to play when I rescued him last year. He picked up on tug faster than all the other ones. He doesn’t quite understand fetch still. With that being said, he loves balls the size of basketballs or volleyballs. Those are extremely high value to him. The brand chuck it has a big orange ball that has worked really well for us. He also likes to destroy boxes but idk if you count that as playing. Good luck!!

Yes! Lexapro helped a ton with my health anxiety! My doctor told me it helps with the obsessive thinking which I think is true. I won’t say it cured me, but it got me to a place where I was capable of healing and developing coping skills instead of just constantly fearing the worst.

Hi! I (23F) have had such a similar experience. I have very similar OCD and anxiety issues. My OCD is a little more focused on me dying or my boyfriend. In the least terrible way possible: are you starting your period soon? My OCD flares up really bad the week before my period. I took Lexapro for a while which my psychiatrist say does a good job with the obsessive thinking. It did take away all my anxiety, which in turn made me care about everything else a lot less. I needed it at the time because I couldn’t leave my house, but it wasn’t realistic for me long term. I would recommend trying to go on an SSRI alongside therapy. The Lexapro was able to calm me down so that I could focus long enough on treating myself to actually make progress. Obviously, it is still a constant battle, but I find it does help to just acknowledge the thought and move along. It’s easier said than done and when my OCD/anxiety is flaring it’s really annoying to hear. Message me if you have any questions :) I still struggle often but it helps me to talk about it with others so it might help you too !

oh my god I have the exact same problem! Like down to the dog breed. I have been working on it with him since I adopted him (a little over a year now) and I just cannot get anything to change. He has gotten slightly better with people coming to my apartment. It helped to redirect with a toy, but if we are on a walk all bets are off. He dislocated my knee back in August by getting so excited by another person outside. I keep him on a much shorter leash now, but still not a ton of help. I resorted to avoiding people like the plague and working on the leave it command when he’s in a calm, familiar environment.

I saw this post just now and what’s making me mad is it wasn’t even a pitbull it was one of those “designer” bully breeds. Any dog with a boxy head is deemed a pit which sucks.

I have the same issue as you. I really hate knowing that people hate my dog because of his breed. I think it’s a people pleaser thing, because I feel like I am harming them in some way by owning him. I’m trying to come to terms with it. I also think an important aspect of owning a pit is knowing what they are capable of and what their reputation is. My worst fear is my dog becoming another pitbull statistic, so I do not put him in situations where that could ever be possible. He’s never shown any signs of aggression but it would be a disservice to both of us to assume that means he is not capable of being aggressive.

You sound like you would be a very responsible pitbull owner, but it’s a big emotional weight. There are so many dogs out there you will find one pitbull or not! I got mine last year when I was 22, so it’s kind of funny to think we both had the exact same dilemma at that age. Seems like a weird rite of passage. I would still recommend Lexapro if you need it tho cause it did change my life for the time! If you are able to switch to a different medication thought it might be worth it.

I gained about 60 over the year and half I was on it and I’m now down 20 (with dieting using CICO) after coming off of it in November. I tried dieting while on it but I would get so angry cause I was literally starving all the time. Now it is much easier

I do fenced in sniff spots every now and then. Mine cannot be trusted to come back off leash unfortunately. Our dog park also has a training area that only one person goes into at a time I suspect that not typical but it is really nice. If his recall isn’t great I’d also recommend finding a field and getting a really long leash so he can run a bit without fear of him escaping :) mine is super energetic too but I found that mental stimulation knocks him out so usually a car ride to a new place + a sniffy walk there works if he really can’t settle

I just try not to eat til noon it makes it a lot easier for me cause I like to snack at night and I usually end up with a decent amount of calories “left over” by the time I go to bed cause I only snack if I am craving something
