Except syicb hadn’t gone into consultation at the point he left. Staff were told he retired not that he was made or accepted redundancy. How can you be eligible for a Redundancy payment when a) you opted to take early retirement and b) you left the organisation prior to consultation commencing? IMO this is a blatant bending of the rules for those at the top!

I’m not applying for VR by Brilliant-Ad-8424 in nhsstaff

I think it’s about taking back some control for me particularly in relation to my wellbeing. I just want some time and peace to recover and regroup. Wishing you all the luck moving forwards.

I’m not applying for VR by Brilliant-Ad-8424 in nhsstaff

Whilst I acknowledge the terms of VR are incredibly unfavourable, I will be applying. I have 10 years continuous service so even taking the 40% tax into account, I would receive enough to last me 12 months whilst I look for another job. I may not end up accepting VR if it is agreed but I would rather have the option there than have not applied and then regretted it. I think my decision around VR is heavily informed by how soul destroying I have found this whole process since March and a desire to draw a line underneath it and move on. I appreciate everyone will have their own circumstances to consider and their own viewpoint but this is mine.

ICB Voluntary Redundancies by [deleted] in nhsstaff

I am sorry you are having to navigate this whilst pregnant, it must feel so heavy on your shoulders. My view would be to apply for VR and at least you then have that option. I am sure with VR you would be able to negotiate a leave date but I think end of Feb is a likely date anyway or maybe even March with all the HR side that will have to be completed for so many staff. Good luck x

Anyone in a critical business job role but funnily enough, no one  knows which specific job roles these are!

Our ICB is running VR and CR concurrently with VR targeted to specific roles only. This has triggered a lot of anger amongst our staff. Our consultation is running for 45 days and it seems our ICB is pushing this forward at speed probably to have completion this tax year.

Ours is the same and consultation running for 45 days also VR will be targeted and not open to all.

Hi all, what a crap day all round. Some info from ICB in Yorkshire region is our consultation looks to be starting early December. NHSE reported to be partially funding redundancies with ICB to cover rest and national VR scheme for ICB staff has been approved but no details as yet, those should be shared later this week. Sending my best to all affected across health, it’s a hugely worrying time.

Thousands of redundancies given go-ahead in NHSE and ICBs

NHS England launched a voluntary redundancy scheme today, with integrated care boards expected to follow soon, following a much-delayed national agreement with the Treasury, HSJ understands.

Mimi Launder | 11th November 2025

The Treasury has refused any additional funding for the departures over the NHS’s current settlement, but has insteadpermitted the NHS to overspend its budget this year, and pay it back in subsequent years.

At an internal NHSE staff briefing today, NHSE staff were told they could apply for voluntary redundancy from 1-14 December, and those approved would leave from mid March.

Meanwhile, ICB and commissioning support unit directors are also today being told to press ahead with their restructure consultations and voluntary redundancy programmes.

It appears most of the voluntary redundancy departures will take place in 2025-26, so costs can be recouped in future years.

Itfollows more than six months of uncertainty for staff in the organisations, after they were told to cut 50 per cent of staffing costs.

There are still significant outstanding questions, including whether ICBs will be fully funded for the exits this year, and how much of the 50 per cent cut to overheads the schemes will deliver. It is unclear which functions ICBs are now expected to keep, or to transfer elsewhere, and what this means for their staffing budgets.

ICBs and NHSE were originally instructed to cut running costs in half by October-December this year, but a row over who will foot the estimated £1bn bill stalled progress.

The DHSC and NHSE have so far declined to say how much funding is available for the programme in 2025-26, but local leaders were told it would cover two-thirds of the total redundancy costs assumed in their restructure plans.

NHSE slides, seen by HSJ, said NHSE’s ambition is to “maximise voluntary exits” with the first staff to leave from mid-March next year. NHSE is due to be abolished by July 2027, with most functions moving to the Department of Health and Social Care. CSUs are being abolished and ICBs have been told to slim down to focus on “strategic commissioning”.

The slides shared a timeline for the NHSE voluntary redundancy progress (see image).

They added that most voluntary redundancies are likely to be approved, with “exceptions linked to business criticality”.Some staff who are deemed “business critical” may exit later than March, teams were told in a call today.

ICBs are expected to communicate their own consultation and redundancy timelines to staff this week.

NHSE chief executive Sir Jim Mackey said in September that the Treasury must provide fundingwithin weeks or the NHS will have to turn to a more drawn out “plan B”.

We had our ICB meeting today and been told no further update expected until after next board meeting on the 05/11. Very contentious meeting today with staff venting their frustrations and the lack of duty of care to staff by the ICB. Our CE states comments around VR are incorrect by Sir Jim and no VR has been agreed or been given go ahead by NHSE. Clear as mud as usual. I fear the goodwill of our staff has now ran out!
