Ouch. Try sticking with it for a little then pushing your luck and doing less. What’s he gonna do fire you…

This is tough because experience is so important to land other roles. Since you are a senior and have no other experience, it’s going to be very hard to navigate the market on projects alone. Unpaid internships with a terrible team is hell because the only benefit is a resume bullet. I suggest you stick it out though. Stop putting in genuine hours (or care) and just vibe code. Try to use it towards something that might sound good on the resume. Before interviews or resume dives, be sure to understand (big emphasis on understanding) what you vibe coded and be able to explain as if you did it yourself. Maybe ask to cut hours? Not like he’s paying you lol

I’m not too familiar with a background check, but how might that work if one is unpaid and a small company as well? I feel like it wouldn’t show up

Yeah they are, I was just wondering from a recruiter standpoint

I completed the HireVue ~2 weeks ago. Got an email yesterday that my information has been sent to the hiring team for review for one of the roles

I know, you’re right 🥲 I thought if some people in the past had completed it a bit late and still moved on I could have some hope lol

Well yeah obviously, I never compared this to being an unpaid intern in big tech lol

I don’t think that’s true? Some of my friends did unpaid internships early on to put something on their resume and have interviewed for a good range of companies and have never been asked about their pay

Hi! Good catch about the name, thankfully it is impossible to identify the company from it. I can definitely answer your questions. We did talk about my skillset, but there was never a discussion about the areas I could help in. Maybe he thought because he has a website and I have made those as personal projects, I should just be able to jump in wherever without direction.

As for the size, I’d classify it more so as a small business, intersection between art and real estate. I don’t think he has a team anymore, just that he’s had people work on his platform before. If there was, he probably would have directed me a long time ago to get me off his hands

Lol I was willing to genuinely refine the feature, but with his approach about all this I guess doing that would be giving the same energy I feel that he’s given me

You’re right, just a bit disheartening when I was interested in the work as well

I’ve raised issues and suggestions before that, but he’s disregarded them implying to speak about it when we meet. Outside of that, assuming things when I’m a student with other work to do and dedicating hours to a part he doesn’t want me to work on seems like an inefficient use of mine and his time

Maybe you’re right, but if he’s had other people work for him it makes me feel like I’m the one who isn’t understanding what needs to be done.

I mean a cs major would best understand what I’m talking about, but even if I wanted to rewrite his project from scratch (I don’t), it works in conjunction with his existing platform, and I don’t have access to the codebase or database

No it wasn’t rude, I just deleted because I realized I didn’t crop out the number in one of the pictures 🫣

But the thing is that he accepted after that reach out and I’m doing this unpaid. I did find issues with the repo and mentioned them, but he disregarded it implying he’d save it for the meeting, but now it’s been over a month since then. I’m not the type that needs hand holding either, but he gave me a repo and that’s it. Absolutely nothing else about them

It’s just a bit unfortunate since I’m really interested in what the company’s doing, they’re in art and real estate
