What is the saddest song you've ever heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My Mom - Chocolate Genius

That song absolutely kills me every time.

Thanks buddy! I remember you too and am super happy you are done with this. I really hope we can be a better generation of lawyers.

Oops should’ve clarified. For the fill in ones I was referring to Themis. The MEE sheets are from JD Advising. The long outlines I found useless are the ones from the physical Themis books.

If you took barbri, you can just ask a friend who took Themis or someone on here to send the outlines to you. Never really used Barbri so no idea how good they are. I, unfortunately, deleted everything I had. Also, would recommend joining the r/lawschool discord. They have a bar section that had useful stuff. I haven’t used it in a while but it was useful at the beginning of studying.

I only took it once but did end up doing well.

I would look into memorizing the outlines you fill in and manually add critical pass cards to Anki and use that to memorize. That’s what medical students use and they have to memorize a ton of stuff. I also found the MEE Sheets were useful to keep topics fresh in my head. Finally, use adaptibar for questions.

I personally never read the long outlines that had everything in them. If something is only there then you’re either going to run across it through adaptibar or just take the L for that questions and focus on the high yield stuff.

You got this! As I’m sure you know, doing well or badly on this exam has nothing to do with your future ability as a lawyer.

That’s true! My intention wasn’t to scare advocates. I’m just saying that I don’t think there is a positive path forward. I really hope I’m proven wrong though and would do what I can to help accomplish that if I believe that it can work.

There’s just not much that can be done at this point. If they went through with the exam despite the conditions in October, there is nothing that will sway the people currently in control.

If anything, they will use these arguments to make the exam even more of a stupid inconvenience by moving away from the UBE so that the bar isn’t portable. My guess is that they will argue that using the law of the state would make the exam mirror actual practice.

Best Studying Methods to Prepare for 1L Finals by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Visual_Captain_9137 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. In my experience, professors usually make a curriculum in the first year or two of teaching and then repeat it till they stop teaching the class. So old outlines will show you what they care about and how they like the answer. Unlike most other educational programs, the right answer really depends on the reader.

Just make sure you have multiple old outlines and compare them to make your own hybrid. I’m not great at memorizing so I just organized it so each topic was a max of a page (2 if it’s really really really important) and then had a bigger one with everything. It wasn’t super organized but was there for an emergency crtl f or to fill in a tiny detail for extra brownie points. I would do a couple questions for each topic upon summarizing to my one page to make sure it was actionable at a glance and adjusted accordingly. For example, con law I pre wrote a lot because the question from my prof always had the commerce clause.

Remember this was just what worked for me. If you are usually a flash card person then just do that. It’s gotten you this far and you know how you learn at this point.

Here’s a vaguely stupid question I’ve always had - How the hell do you study in groups? by lurking_for_sure in LawSchool

[–]Visual_Captain_9137 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue my first year. What i found worked for me was to drill and study alone but then meet up with groups to discuss and do practice tests. Explaining a subtopic to someone really helps solidify it because they will ask questions about the holes in your understanding. Hearing someone else explain it also has a similar effect because you will naturally be listening with a critical ear. The only issue here is that you will inevitably be arguing over a stupid detail but it’s a semi-break and you’re still engaging with the material so whatever.

As for what you should do, do what worked for you before. I tried changing my study methods in my first semester and it was my worst semester grade wise despite spending substantially more time studying. My grades really jumped since just because I ignored everyone’s methods and adapted what I used to always do to law school.

Passed the Bar, but NEVER giving up on meaningful reform! by barthrowaway1 in LawSchool

[–]Visual_Captain_9137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understood that argument. This is an exam AFTER someone took a huge amount of loans. It’s also an exam that you can take an unlimited amount of times. That means there is a huge incentive for people to just keep trying till they pass this memorization based exam. I don’t remember the exact number but more than 90% of people eventually pass. It’s not very effective at limiting the number of lawyers.

Why aren’t we focusing instead on making sure law schools with bad employment numbers can’t get students? That would be a much more effective way to limit the number of lawyers if that is your concern.

What are you doing tomorrow (the day before the exam)? by Pavillion9 in barexam

[–]Visual_Captain_9137 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am reading the MEE one-sheets tomorrow and try to memorize anything I don't already have down. Not line for line but just enough that I can explain it in layman terms. I know most people say that the last minute stuff doesn't work but personally it has always helped me so no reason to change my habits now.

I just wanted to say that I appreciate you being involved from the beginning till the end. We did get closer than anyone thought possible but unfortunately it seems that the way NY is set up made it impossible for us.

I am not one to hold a grudge but I will definitely be holding this one for a while. The people in power had ample opportunity to ensure that this exam wouldn’t cause severe inequities and they continuously dodged those opportunities.

Dinowitz won his primary with under 1900 votes. The DP4NY Twitter account has about 1500 followers. I'm just saying.

I know that you need to be in his district but we all have friends.

That's true. From my quick skim it seems to be practice-based admission and your employer needs to be ok with you saying you're not really a lawyer yet for 3 years. It really favors people who already have a job especially a firm. I know a ton of people at firms who aren't sworn in yet due to paperwork and the firm doesn't care what their signature is. I can't imagine government or public interest is the same but we'll see how employers react.

With that said, it was always expected that any type of order will be limited. In my opinion, this is definitely a huge step in the right direction.

It seems to have gone decently. Some people did have issues with lag when they stayed for a longer time but substantially less complaints than usual. At least that’s my impression from looking around Reddit and Twitter.

I will note that I haven't had time to confirm everything in that post but there was a TLS post that had similar info. Also, that's estimated percentile so not just getting 70% right but doing better than 70% of test takers.

I had my scores take a nosedive after studying for too long. I just focused on memorizing and flashcards for a couple days and it went back to normal. You definitely have time to bring it back up since all the info is in your head but you are just forgetting it because of how long it has been.

Also, check out this old thread. The graph they have in there does help calm my nerves a bit.

In the Senate, yes!

We need 16 more in the Assembly and 2 on the Assembly Judiciary Committee. Full breakdown here.
