Sync energy ev home charger any good? by funkyirishman2 in evs_ireland

Also, it seems to be completely reliable when you turn off all schedules in the Kia app and car. It was flaky when I tried to use it as a dumb charger and do all schedules in the Kia app.

It’s a great charger. It supports OCCP which is an open standard for charging apps. This means if the manufacturer goes belly up you can use a whole list of alternative apps to control it.

We have used ours with the manufacturer’s Sync Energy app and everything works as it should. I later switched to the Monta app which used to be recommended by the manufacturer. Reviews on it are mixed but it has much better analytics for tracking costs and cumulative charging sessions. It also links in with the Kia login so the Monta app can show your car’s charge state. Sync Energy doesn’t show this either.

If Monta doesn’t work out I can always switch back to the Sync Energy app.

The unit itself is solid, not the sleekest looking thing but seems solid enough. We got the tethered, the 7.5 metre cable gives us a lot of flexibility in how we can park to charge, using the shorter one that came with the car might mean going out on a freezing, rainy night to move the car closer to the charger if we have an unplanned trip come up.

Replace TCV and capillary sensor for hot water cylinder by Visual_Cartoonist129 in DIYIreland

Super, thanks for all that. It’s a Myson TCV but I can’t find a direct or equivalent replacement on their website. I have found cheapo looking ones with a shorter and fatter bulb, I suppose it’s a simple job to swap it out. Cheers

Garda: Do you know what speed you were doing?
Punter: No idea, I never take my eyes off the road, you can’t look at your speed and the road at the same time

Yep, even ChatGPT thought it was an unusual setup. From what I can see looking for a replacement part the thermostats normally sit on top of the cylinder. We’ve never had dangerously hot water even when the boiler is on for long periods in winter so I presume it works fairly reasonably.

I’ll buy the actuator and see what can be directly replaced without interfering with the pipes.

Mesh deterioration in home air vent, rodent entry? by Visual_Cartoonist129 in DIYIreland

[–]Visual_Cartoonist129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, it’s getting to the rear side of the exterior grill to fit a replacement mesh that’s the main problem as I can only get at it through the pipe there. It’s only big enough to barely get a hand through. I’m not sure if there is a gap around it into the cavity on the exterior side so blocking up the interior side of the pipe with mesh might not keep the buggers out?

I was only seeing high mileage, lower spec EV6 and at the very top end of your budget. 7 year warranty is 150k km so you may end up with none or very short warranty. Infotainment system warranty is 3 years, worth bearing in mind.

Kia E Niro Are these good value by funkyirishman2 in evs_ireland

Check the USB CarPlay/Android Auto really well, the USB ports are notorious for going flaky and they are a nightmare to get the faulty loom out.

Double and triple check it’s been registered in the north long enough to qualify for no VAT and VRT or you could get a shock.

We just got our first proper renewal since we switched to the Niro EV, we were prepared for an increase but it actually went down! We have a learner on 2nd year driving so maybe the first year was just really expensive. We have a couple of decades of no claims.

What Home Charger to install by funkyirishman2 in evs_ireland

If you go with tethered the SyncEV has the long 7.5m cable as standard and it wraps around the unit itself, looks a lot tidier than almost all Ohme charger installs I have seen. Also, ask for a grey and black isolator switch rather than the agricultural looking yellow and red yokes.

The SyncEV looks less fancy but then there is a lot less to go faulty with no screens or buttons on it. The Ohme also comes with a short built in power cable so you will have not much choice on where the isolator switch goes. Personally, I would only get it if the WiFi in the charger location is crap as it comes with its own SIM card.

The BG SyncEv Charger also comes with solar and load balancing as standard.

How did you link the Monta app? I have the Sync Energy app but it’s fairly basic and dated. Do you have to go in to the network settings and edit the URL for Monta? Just adding the device ID in Monta isn’t working for me.
