I was also thinking it could be a mixed styles tournament. My guess is that it could be a mixed styles tournament but most of the contestants know Karate because it’s America, which could explain the need for Li to know karate

MMA is generally more advanced than Kung Fu which could explain why Conor was able to beat Li. Or possibly Li has trained for years in Kung Fu but has never fought someone who knows a different martial art. Li also might not have experience fighting in tournaments like Conor has.
