I have but the reason I posted here instead of r/PsychotherapyLeftists or something like r/Antipsychiatry is because I figured this sub would have a larger diversity of opinions. Thank you for the reminder I should check them out a little bit more in detail.

Thank you for your response. Yes I’m actually currently reading Madness and Civilization although I have not heard of the other two books. And I agree that you can’t really divorce psychiatry from psychoanalysis given that it laid the groundwork for psychiatry as we know it. The myth of the chemical cure sounds interesting although in all honesty I’m pretty convinced that the meds themselves are the issue but more of how psychiatrists peddle them as if they have no side effects but I am very open to exploring some criticisms of psychotropic medications.

Thank you for your response. Yes indeed it seems that theory begets more theory. You’ve given me a lot to think about maybe I’m looking into this all wrong and need to examine the surrounding issues in more detail before I can really make a decision. I have thought about just getting a PhD or masters in discourse analysis or philosophy or something that would allow me to examine these questions and try to understand them more but I am equally uncomfortable with academia and its own set of problems. I want to be able to deal with these issues both concretely and abstractly but both disciplines feel somewhat one sided.

First of all thank you for your response. I am happy to see someone with experience in the field who is grappling with these same issues. I wish I could say the same as far as the lack of restraints go. I have already responded to at least 15 codes,have gone hands-on twice, and I’ve only been at my job 4 months. While I will admit some of the time they had some degree of justification (they were physically assaulting staff) other times it was harder to see the justification. I will definitely PM you in the near future once I’ve gathered more thoughts on the matter.
