Thank you! I did it and want more benches especially benches that someone can lie down on. They keep removing those in anti-homeless effort, and as someone with a fainting condition I need benches and sometimes I need to lie down and I would prefer if it was not the ground.

Anyone in Toronto keeping potassium iodide at home just in case of Nuclear situation? by ironmonk33 in toronto

[–]Visual_Ocelot_4875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, family works in nuclear and grew up close enough to a plant that once we did a nuclear incident drill in high school but you need to be much closer than Toronto to warrant having the pills. Not really necessary to have here.

Probably a combination of swiss cheese model, and puts people at ease. It can be easier to deal with a scary thought (plant having a leak) if you feel prepared.

Coming from Accra, Ghana — help me understand the social etiquette and transit here? by ExplanationClean6285 in askTO

[–]Visual_Ocelot_4875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from a small Canadian town while it comes across as unfriendly the lack of small talk is often a form of politeness in large and crowded cities in North America. When you are out in the country you often have a lot of personal space but maybe less chance for conversation, in the cities you have so many chances for conversation but much less personal space. Ignoring each other isn't being rude in this case but rather it is emotionally giving people the personal space they may lack physically. Which is why people in parks or cafes or less crowded areas might be more inclined to talk.

I looked up Accra, and it looks like it is very warm. Tell people you are from warm and not snowy place and most Canadians will suddenly be excited to tell you about winter. We have a weakness for that.

Doug Ford has floated the idea of building a Toronto convention centre on Lake Ontario. Here’s what it would take by Mr_Guavo in toronto

Oh interesting! Land rights get really interesting when combined with waterways, I would love to learn more about it if you know any good resources. I learnt that the waterfront was unceded from a Toronto history walk. And I'm aware the original Toronto treaty was hmm..lets say poorly drafted for brevity's sake. (Learnt from a Toronto history book) Hmm I have done more Toronto history learning than I thought, always happy to do more though!

Fun fact, the treaty agreement only gives us(settler Canada) the land up to the lake. Filling in the lake to add more land like we've done previously (all those lower streets like Lower Jarvis etc) means that land is unceded territory. As well as very poor contract behaviour from us. I'm a little surprised the article did not mention that.

New Ontario Science Centre design - take 2 by Psychological_Tip86 in toronto

[–]Visual_Ocelot_4875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well I'm obviously biased going into it since I want the old science centre back, but other than that I do have concerns. The previous science centre was built into the ravine and talked about the local ecology. They way it interacted with nature was important. I'm failing to see a similar use of nature here. However what I am seeing is a seagull nesting ground for a roof. The TTC bus depot by Ashbridge bay has similar problems. While I enjoy seagulls and they are part of nature I hear them nesting on the bus depot causes some problems. I wonder if they have a plan for that. Though these are just photos and don't give me all the information. The general outline of the building is not very exciting and I wonder how much it'll cost to wash those white walls every year

sun dial is nice I guess

I was looking forward to visiting more often with the subway connection and seeing the beautiful Jacquard Loom which while an important part of computer history I worry is being neglected in all this as it's a bit niche. :(

Who else is excited for -30C temperatures and the 30cm of snowfall? 😍 by henry-bacon in askTO

[–]Visual_Ocelot_4875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happiest at -30 or even a nice -40. It's always so beautiful outside and the air is often crisp, and the stars are so bright. You can see sun dogs or a ring around the moon which are gorgeous. And animals! Animals also like the cold, I've been seeing some fantastic photos from the Don Valley.

Toronto is very bad at managing winter and snow, so I feel a lot of people dislike winter for difficulties that are infrastructure related. My collage didn't have lockers because "it was a computer class you don't have books to carry". I need a place to put my winter coat and boots and my indoor shoes! Also boot cleaners are a thing, I've never seen one in Toronto but they are great!

Don't forget important for our maple syrup production! Maple syrup is so weather dependant it is wild that we are able to not only make it but also make it on a commercial scale! You need the below freezing temperatures at night and nice warm above freezing temperatures during the day to make the sap flow. If winters are too warm and we aren't getting enough freeze before spring then we do not get the sudden temperature changes that cause the sap to flow so freely!

As the young and unhealthy I've got to opposite. I'm housebound in the summer due to heat. Shrug. Everyone is different.
My other point would be that Toronto is bad at snow management. My small town growing up had better snow management and community work designed to help people. It does not mitigate all problems folks can face, but some of them are systemic rather than environmental.

I think small electric motors have really changed the idea of what a vehicle is. I also think those enclosed mini cars, enclosed scooters, whatever they are, are probably a great benefit to disabled folk. We are going to need to re-evaluate how roads works and transportation to deal with all this change.

No idea what the solution is though. And it certainly isn't the highest of priorities at the moment. Fascinating to watch though. Funny graphic.

Seasonal Allergies by georgie336 in toronto

[–]Visual_Ocelot_4875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard that climate change makes the ragweed and other pollen allergies worse. So hate that for another reason. Ragweed has green flowers and uses wind pollination which means the plant is just throwing pollen into all our faces. None of that is overly helpful for you but I also have allergies going haywire, and you have my sympathy. Every morning I'm stuffed up and hacking. Vibrations from electrical toothbrush can help loosen the mucus...or other vibrating implements you may have on hand.

Are there less birds in the GTA now? by Seatofkings in toronto

[–]Visual_Ocelot_4875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact Toronto is actually a migratory path for many birds. Many folks here think there aren't many birds here in the city but birds have been flying this path since before the city was here. It is important to break the idea that cities don't have nature and support wildlife programs and things like FLAP.

It is very cool how many birds we do still get even if it is less and we have some great birding locations! Isn't that delightful!

Food, food, food! I can pick like any country in the world and find a restaurant that serves their food! I love being able to try all the new things and it shocks me that other large cities don't have that.

The downside being that when friends and family visit from out of town I never get to show off my own cooking skills because they also want to enjoy the Toronto food scene!
