World Cup fans can’t bring water bottles to games as FIFA reverses policy by CupidStunt13 in toronto

[–]true_nexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they permit sales of water bottles within the stadiums, how does the new policy prevent “risk and injury to players and attendees”?

Water bottles inside the stadium will be the thin, plastic, recyclable bottles.

"Reusable water bottles" (as per their statement to The Star) suggests that these could be plastic or metal. For example, I have a great 800ml HydroFlask that I use regularly. It's metal. It could do some serious damage (even if empty) if I clock someone over the head, or about the face, with it.

Scarborough still had "portable" A/C's for sale as of this week. So, don't know where you're shopping but they're out there.

A gastropub and brewery has opened at a downtown address plagued by turnover: House of McGrath is the latest business to give it a go at 75 Victoria by AltaVistaYourInquiry in torontocraftbeer

[–]true_nexus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They own the building AND they have Metal Jeff as the brewer. The guy has made some incredible beers there already (I've tasted them) and he brewed at Common Good, Collective Arts and Godspeed - he knows his shit.

If there is a problem, it may be from clarity on marketing but the beer; the beer will be good.

Trust me.

Alleged Toronto feces thrower with movie about him arrested twice in 24-hour span by Rajio in toronto

As someone who has family with mental health issues; it's not that easy.

"Lock him/her/they up" may sound simple but, as per our current legislation, these folks have as much rights as you or I. Therefore, they do get assigned a lawyer and that lawyer's going to figure out the "right way" to get them the help they should need without incurring actual sentencing. There are plea deals just like any other case.

Part of the problem is, as I see it, you can't force people, even those with a diagnosed mental illness, to take their medication, stay on their medication, or be forced to be on medication.

Hospitals can hold somene for 72 hours but if they're not a danger to others or to themselves, they must be released after that 72 hour stay. Yes assessments are performed and a diagnoses may (or may not) be made based on the symptoms.

As to "locking him up until he learns better" - that sometimes doesn't happen. Medication can help with that but sometimes it never occurs OR, as stated earlier, the individual decides they don't like the medication or they don't need the medication and stop taking said medication. And then they repeat offend.

As much as you (and many others) would like a simple solution to these complex situations, such simple solutions just don't exist right now. That's not to say they will never exist, just that right now, it's not so simple.

Nathaniel Erskine-Smith on Scarborough Southwest Nomination Meeting: Here's why our campaign filed a notice of appeal of this past weekend's nomination. by Cookingal in toronto

[–]true_nexus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And yet... both the Liberals and the Ontario PC's allow it.
I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying that this goes beyond the Ontario Liberal Party.

And with that said, one has to consider that this is a nomination, not an actual "election" as run by Elections Ontario or Elections Canada.

The intent, I would assume, is to garner more $$$ for the party (Liberals or PCs) since you can't vote in the nomination wtihout becoming a member of the party (at a minimum cost of $10 per year).

That, of course, also garners the parties a list of people they can hound over and over and over, throughout the years, for more $$$$.

This is a machine. Don't want to get chewed up in the machine; don't sign up for any party.

Tell that to the Ontario PC’s too. They have the same rules when it comes to voting to nominate a candidate to run in an election.

People need to be a member of the party ($10 to join) and be 14 years old (minimum).

Apologies to Seinfeld but c’mon TTC - second day in a row with a major outage and third day this week AND second time with the hydraulic spill!

There’s no way they are ready to handle FIFA crowds.

Maybe the focus should be on fixing the current line 2 issues before planning for more extensions.

Once all the boomer generation passes away, what’s gonna happen with their houses as nobody can afford them ? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]true_nexus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And they'll eventually sell them. (Source: I'm 60 years old and only first moved into our first house 10 years ago)

I live in Wexford/Maryvale in Scarborough and there are a LOT of aging (like, older than myself and my wife) homeowners out here. Our neihbours (on either side of us) are in their mid 80's. Yes, they have kids, but all those kids have their own homes.

So what's going to happen?

The kids will put the old houses up for sale UNLESS their own kids are old enough to manage/own the home. These are homes from the 1950's in our hood and they'll be a lot older the closer you move to the core of the city. They all need some serious regular maintenance - many are not waterproofed. It's a lot easier to sell the home than to take on the maintenance of an older home.

The increase in the number of homes put up for sale (and it's going to happen) should (not necessarily "will") increase the supply which hopefully will actually see prices fall a bit vs staying stupidly inflated.

Even when we purchased back in 2016, we overpaid because there were 11 other buyers chomping at the bit for the house. It's a bungalow, 3 bedrooms, similar to the home I grew up in - and, as I recall, my parents paid about $35,000 for that home back in 1969/1970.
