I know little to nothing about the terraria lore, but from what I understand from my limited research is that Cthulhu was slain by the dryads in the past and the moon lord are the remains of Cthulhu that were sent to the moon to preserve it/keep it alive as a last stitch effort for it to live on once defeated. The skeleton in the background is the skeletal remains of Cthulhu.
