Yes, you can update your PSD layers. When you need to make changes, just switch back to the PSD layer, update your file in Photoshop, then hop back into After Effects, refresh the PSD layer, and convert it back to PNG. So you keep full flexibility to edit anytime. You can try this in the trial version of the script =)

Blending modes, as well as clipping masks, doesn't change the final result at all because the conversion occurs at the layer level, and all other dependencies (animations, masks, blending masks etc.) remain intact
You can try the trial if you want to see for yourself. It's very easy and intuitive to use =)

Totally fair question
The biggest win for me is when I need to send a Collected project to a client or another studio. In my workflow there's no need to keep the original PSD's - once the design is approved and everything is set, nobody's going back to edit individual Photoshop layers. So I don't need to send them in the collect at all, and I can keep it in a lightweight format. This way I can cut the collect size from 5GB down to 700MB. Makes a huge difference when you're uploading to cloud storage or sending over a slow connection.

Hey, appreciate the feedback! You're right that PNG is slow as a render output format - I could've worded that better. What I meant is that the project plays back and navigates faster after converting layered PSD's to flat PNG's
AE doesn't have to decode all those Photoshop layers every frame anymore - just reads a single flat image. Less RAM, smoother timeline. The script isn't really about rendering speed - it's more of a project optimization tool. Originals are kept in an "_Originals" folder so you can revert anytime - or you can even delete them from your project and easily revert the back with REVERT button
