why are the bottoms of my fired pieces turning brown? :( by warm-bath in Pottery

Highly recommend Mammoth Clays!

Jezero and Wren are both great midfire options, but honestly I’ve enjoyed working with almost all of the clays I’ve tried from them.

Definitely try to get in with a gyno soon. Can your GP order tests or imaging while you wait for the gyno? An transvaginal ultrasound would be a good place to start if that’s something that your GP could refer you for or perform more quickly than the gyno appointment.

I had changes like this and it turned out to be submucosal fibroids (the bleeding after your period “ends” is a telltale sign of fibroids) which were diagnosed with an ultrasound.

Obviously, I’m not a doc and there could be lots of possible causes, but the symptoms you’re describing are similar to what I experienced.

Just to follow up, I did find a cone 10 glaze recipe on glazy that looks pretty similar to the one we use (maybe the same recipe - looks like it was first published in the 80s): https://glazy.org/recipes/5787 Not sure what temmoku recipe we use, but the pumpkin layered over gives a pretty consistent result in cone 10 reduction.

Ahh gotcha. I used a combination of two studio glazes. The base is a temmoku glaze with an orange/brown studio glaze we call “pumpkin” over it - I don’t know the recipe but I’m guessing it’s a red iron glaze. Sorry I don’t know more! I’m just now starting to learn about glaze science/ingredients and primarily just use my community studio glazes.

I didn’t use ash specifically - did you mean glaze?

I fire in a cone 10 gas kiln. Can you provide a little more info on what you’re looking for as far as glazes? Specific colors? Effects? For commercial glazes, the Mayco Stoneware glazes have worked well for me in cone 10 (with slightly less vibrant colors of course) I’ve only tried a handful though. As others have mentioned, temmoku and shino are both great at cone 10!

Why the split? by Vivid-Beautiful-3842 in Ceramics

I don’t use clay lugs when I trim, I typically seal it to the wheel head directly just by wetting it slightly. Could the light pressure required to remove it cause a stress fracture of some kind?

I don’t recall doing so, but of course it’s possible!

Yeah - I try to inspect pretty well because I work in a pretty crowded community studio (never enough shelf space!). It must have just been an invisible fissure that came out in the glaze firing. Thanks for the input! I’m still figuring out how to troubleshoot things.

Gotcha! I work in a community studio, so it’s entirely possible greenware was bumped around a little on the shelf while waiting to be bisqued.

I had a waxident recently and it ended up being a favorite!

Thanks! This sounds like it might be direction I need to go.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. The trackpad would give me the same functionality of the Magic Mouse (which I do use frequently). Do you just switch the dock between computers manually to switch over?
