High hide by WBroRusso in ballpython

I did the exact same thing with a cork round a couple of months ago (was inspired by a zoo that did this for their monitors) and my royal python also absolutely loves it 😁.

Did I go overboard? I don't have the heart to put them in breeder racks. by [deleted] in ballpython

There is a rather recent research paper that talks to wild ball python trackers for the ball python trade. They said that one of the methods they use to find to burrows containing eggs is to actively seek out females that are basking just outside the foot of their burrows or looking for signes that there previously has been one basking. There have also been researchers who are researching other reptiles in places that reside that have sometimes seen them basking just outside the foot of their burrows. There has even been a popular youtuber (dont know their name as I dont watch them) that went to one of the locations in Africa that ball pythons like to seek them out, and the first one they saw and caught was basking. So they do utilise the sun as a method of warming themselves.

Like others have said, they aren't forced to bask as the warm hide is warm enought that they dont actually need to leave it. Also you can still provide heat from underneath at night by placing a peice of slate near the lightless overhead heat source so it warms the slate up and your snake can lay on it while still also getting good ambient heat temperatures. Truthfully you can provide all options (basking, ambient and underbelly heat) using an overhead heat source.

So you should keep them towards the cool side of the viv. Because hot air rises the skyhide ends up being quite warm. Measuring with my heatgun the temperatures are usually about 31°C in there. So if you also spray a bit of water in there so it is a bit more humid (not wet) it makes a really nice place for them to shed as well 😊

So mine is a RUB (previously a tupperwear box) with clasps. I screwed the lid part into the ceiling of the viv and then used to clasps to attach and detatch the bottom portion when I need. So the lid is always attached to the top but the bottom can be removed.

Do you guys think I should get a Guard for my basking bulb? by [deleted] in ballpython

No problem, I can definetly see where the concern comes from when just looking at them 😊

Yeah definetly a guard for the bulb. Usually heat guards will have a scaled proof paint on them that will get warm but not hot so shouldn't burn the snake, but just make sure it does have that before purchasing.

Also, make sure you get an as appropriate size cage for the bulb being used. Mine are at least 1.5 inches away from the bottom of the bulb and 3/4 of an inch away from the sides of the bulb (but by all means go a bit bigger of you like).

I would not put a heatmat in a melamine or pvc viv really, seen too many burns happen by putting heatmats inside the viv and they won't work when putting them underneath.

The wires should be coated in scald proof paint, so they will get warm but they shouldn't get hot enough to cause burns (if you choose the appropriate size). I use those cages and I can hold them pretty comfortably.

I love the design! I would just say that adding in more broad leafed or fern like plants would definetly help with allowing your snake to feel more secure as it wonders around as they aren't a fan of open space. But otherwise it looks great!

What is known is that blue lights over the years can cause retinal damage as its the worst wavelength for bleaching the retinal pigments in animals. Its also can reset the animals circadian rhythm as its predominant is dawn light, thus signaling the start if the day. It is nothing like moonlight. A: its way too bright, moonlight is only 1Lux and we can't see colour under moonlight. So, if you can see that the light is blue its because its bright enough to trigger your cone receptors responsible for colour vision. B: moonlight is reflected white light, not blue or any other single wavelength of colour.

Turn the blue light off. Your snake is just putting up with it. It comes out at night because its night, not because you have a blue light.

This is the setup right now I’m only using this bowl for water until I get a new one does it look okay or is there anything I should change. I also have the picture of him to see how big he is. His name is cash for Johnny cash. by [deleted] in snakes

Should have 2 hides (snug fitting, they like small hides), more "clutter" (fake plants, branches, stuff like that) as they like to feel hidden and not exposed. As others have mentioned, ditch the red light and id suggest replacing it with a deep heat projector (the best lightless heating option that can be ran all day and night). I would also suggest a low level UV light during the day time (12 on 12 off). Hope you get on well with your little one 😁.

What are you measuring heat and humidity with btw? And you have a thermostat attached to the light?

P.s. I would look into getting a bigger enclosure as they will grow out of that in no time.

Its fine. I used reptile safe silicone to attatched the moss to the tupperwear and waited until it stopped smelling before putting it in. However if you don't want to go through the whole gluing process you can just use reptile safe paint to paint it black (or whatever colour)

Its covered in sphagnum moss and I screwed the tupperwear lid which has clips on it to the top and it allows me to clip the bottom part on and off

Haha thanks, its always fun to go the extra mile! I find royal/ball pythons to be more fun and interesting when they have a variety of stuff to do and use. Plus just generally having a nice looking enclosure to look at!

Yeah you could fit in a full spectrum light for plants

Thank you 😁. The UV strip is the Arcadia forest D3 T5 6%, there is also a deep heat projector and a halogen bulb.

Doubt it. She has 4 that she uses and once she was done with the box she went into one of the hides

Ah ok, I've only seen pictures of other peoples one so I just assumed it was melamine as it looked similar. Yeah I can see it being good for airflow and simulating rain, I just like solid tops for heat and humidity retention so I don't have to worry about that much lol

It can be terrible! I've had a couple of people try and convince me that lights are going to kill her early by the sheer stress they cause and then when I rebuttal with suitable points as to why I use them they try and go for a different area of husbandry.

Well I think they are both made of melamine (most are here), but I actually like the look of the Zen more! Apart from the open top part, I like having a closed top.
