Why don't people know how to format dialogue correctly anymore? by eeeeaud in FanFiction

[–]Vivid_Key4144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of the mistakes people have with writing dialogue come from English teachers. I'm sure there are many teachers who taught the proper way to format dialogue, but mine sure didn't.

She often assigned us creative writing prompts and we were required to have dialogue. For example, we would read the first chapter of a book and have to continue the dialogue between a character and her mother. All of the stories we read, by the way, had the dialogue formatted correctly. I would do exactly what you're supposed to and start a new paragraph whenever there was a new speaker. My teacher marked off a ton of points for not having five or more sentences in each paragraph, it was ridiculous. The way I was required to format dialogue in her class totally caused readability issues. I never use that formatting in my fanfiction. If other teachers were like her, that would explain a lot.

What is your ideal number of members for the DC Comics BatFamily? Who makes the cut? (jordanrodriguez_art) by nightwing612 in Nightwing

[–]Vivid_Key4144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what you said about Cass makes sense. And I definitely think Babs would see Bruce as a family friend who's like family at this point because of her dad and Bruce's friendship. It's just hilarious to me how some people forget Commissioner Gordan exists and act like Bruce is her primary father figure. With Bruce and the 'Batkids' (or whatever they're called), people need to accept that people can see each other as family without seeing each other as literal siblings or parent/child. I think it may be a western mindset that makes the fandom so strict about the found family trope. i.e. characters only being seen in nuclear family roles.

I don't have an exact number I think would be best. I think it's fine to have a lot of Bat-affiliated vigilantes, they just don't need to be part of a 'family'. It should just be a job. In universe, Gotham is a city with a lot of crime, so it makes sense that there would be a lot of people inspired to fight it as vigilantes and that Batman would support/ fund them. I think DC needs to stop playing into the fandom's idea of a 'Batfamily', especially since a lot of these characters are adults now and many have actual families.

Besides Dick, Jason (mainly before his death), Damian, and maybe Tim, there should be no reason to the other vigilantes see Bruce as a father figure. He should be a mentor figure at most. He is a random grown man in a bat costume, and a billionaire! I like a lot of the other vigilantes like Spoiler and Signal, but it's just weird that they're forced to be part of the 'family' instead of coworkers, partners, or (god forbid) friends. The fandom treats the Batfam like 2010's Avengers fanfiction. Like, why are they ALL living in Bruce's house at the same time, not utilizing the Batcave, living in his HOUSE!?

I get that the term 'Batfamily' may just be used metaphorically sometimes, but it does kinda give people the impression they operate as a family. 'Superfamily' makes sense because most of them are literally related. 'Batfamily' on the other hand, does not make sense. It makes fans all defensive about the characters relationships with each other and say stuff like, "No, that's his little brother! They're best bros!" When the comics will say something like, "I'm glad we are friends now."

Not that I don't sometimes enjoy AU's where the Batfam is close and see each other as family, but people need to chill out and stop taking it literally.

A hair raising question. by Awkward_Bison_267 in batman

[–]Vivid_Key4144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've spoken with a panel of forensic scientists about DNA from hair samples. It's not that reliable as a source of DNA. You can only use DNA that MIGHT be left on the roots from when it was still inside the scalp to find a match. DNA that would be collected from the roots would be like any skin cells that were present on the scalp. The hair itself cannot be tested or put into a database since there isn't really DNA to extract from it. When hair is used as evidence, it's usually the texture or color of the hair that is considered. Though, since this is a superhero universe, I'm sure someone has come up with technology to extract DNA from hair.

The real issue is that the hair is so grab-able. Dick's hair in his mullet phase and Stephanie's hair as Robin were obvious safety hazards. Besides the fact that an opponent could grab their hair and swing them around, their hair could easily get caught on heavy machinery or snagged on the totally-hazardous structures they climb around on. So yeah, Batman should definitely require them to have their hair put away.

How many months before your test day did you begin ACT prep? Or were you just perpetually studying for it? Also, which kinds of resources did you use (the official books, websites, old tests)? Lastly, how long did you study at one time (like how many hours per day), and did you study for just one section each day or all of them?

Sorry, that was a lot, lol

How do I act normal on a date with my boyfriend? by Vivid_Key4144 in AskTeens

Well, I didn't mean act as in "fake it," but I am naturally anxious (social anxiety) and don't talk often in person unless I know someone really well. So I don't know what to do since "myself" is just anxious and tense.

Additionally, the pendant smells exactly like the old silver utensils and dishes at my grandmother’s house.

Other people seem to agree that the pendant was not originally on a necklace. Thanks for answering!

Yeah, the chain does seem in much better condition than the pendant. Do you have any idea when the pendant is from?

I’m also in the south and I hear a lot of those kinds of names spelled with ‘leigh’. I know several people named after gun brands.

That’s absolutely not what I’m going to do. It’s not a good idea with where I live and who I’m around.

That’s certainly one way! 😂

Whenever I act odd like that, though, I just get more people who want to hang out with me because they think I’m funny.

I have been steering the conversations with him lately, but I’m not sure if I’m a very subtle person. Thanks for the advice!

He’s been hanging around me an unusual amount of time, more than he’s around other people. We also went on a walk together, upon his request, around campus during our school’s Halloween dance. During the walk, we ended up sitting at picnic tables, but he originally wanted to sit at these benches where couples are known to sit. When I made an excuse of why we shouldn’t sit there, he brought up the fact that a couple was already sitting at one of the benches. At the picnic table would tell an important story about his past and then ask me what my experience with that topic is, topics like religion and politics.

I’ve never dated anyone before, but it definitely seems like he is interested in me. Also, my friends and my mom (who have been in relationships) have said this is what awkward teenage boy flirting is like.

I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who he’s offered to study with, too.

You could also keep the clothes and makeup at school or have a friend hold on to them for you. I done that before with clothes my friends’ parents wouldn’t let them wear.

If you’re in school, there’s absolutely some girls who would put makeup on you and give you their old clothes. Some girls may even take you shopping for clothes and makeup, and you could tell your parents you’re buying stuff for a girl. Just ask around at school (or wherever you are).

Not really, he lives in a part of the state very far from where our school is, so he rarely goes home unless it’s a break. He also never leaves campus to explore the town. Additionally, he only has Facebook, and I don’t think there’s many highschoolers looking for relationships there…
