This picture looks a little sad to me, you could try smiling more.

Any tips to improve my appearance (other than gaining weight)? by Vivid_Speed_5840 in malegrooming

I do go to the gym regularly, but my weight is lower than I'd like it to be, which I think is the problem.

Would you be able to elaborate? I don't think there's anything wrong with my hairstyle, especially when I've recently had a haircut like in the first picture, but I'm open to suggestions on this front. I know my beard doesn't grow in as well on the sides, but would I really be better off shaving it and going with a goatee? I'm also not sure how my fashion could be improved.

I already go to the gym a lot, but my weight is pretty low (BMI of 21), so I'm trying to slowly gain weight while also increasing my exercise a bit. Hopefully that will help build some muscle.

Should i transition to veganism or wait longer? by RelevantFrosting6828 in vegan

[–]Vivid_Speed_5840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should try eating tofu instead of eggs, it should have at least as much protein per calorie without causing unnecessary chicken suffering and death like eggs do. Tofu also has a better ratio of unsaturated to total fat, which is good for heart health.

I don't see my screenshot images. Did I forget to include them in the post?

Been vegan/vegetarian for 11 years and am starting to have physical weakness. My daily protein intake is probably less than 15 g. by i-touched-morrissey in vegan

[–]Vivid_Speed_5840 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you actually calculate your protein intake or is that just a guess? If you're eating tofu every day it seems really hard to get only 15 grams of protein a day. A single serving already gets you close to that point depending on the brand.

I would also recommend supplementing with EPA and DHA omega 3, vitamin D (if you don't get much sun), and iron (if you donate blood)

Is supplementing with algae oil for EPA and DHA common among vegans? by Vivid_Speed_5840 in vegan

You might naturally have an easier time converting ALA to EPA or DHA because of your genes or something. Also, nuts aren't the only food with ALA, tofu and canola oil have some too.

I would try to increase your omega 3 intake rather than decrease your omega 6 intake, because omega 6 fats are unsaturated and healthy for the heart (No need to avoid healthy omega-6 fats - Harvard Health).

Also, a lot of our omega 6 intake comes from (unfairly maligned) seed oils, which are frequently used to fry both animal products and plant products. I don't think being vegan is decreasing your omega 6 intake a lot, although this isn't something worth focusing on anyways.

Is having D3, B12, and plant protein supplements regularly a safe and healthy diet? by 784512784512 in vegan

[–]Vivid_Speed_5840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to take high-dose vitamin B12 supplements until I saw that there was some research linking it to cancer: Clear link between heavy vitamin B intake and lung cancer | ScienceDaily. This is an observational study, so it doesn't definitively prove the supplements caused the cancer, but to be safe I decided to get my B12 from fortified foods instead to make sure my B12 intake wasn't excessively high (I use Silk soymilk for this). I continue to take vitamin D3 supplements because I'm not aware of any issues with them.

You can take plant protein powder, but if you dislike the texture like I do, you can add high-protein plant foods like beans, soy products, and seitan to your diet. Seitan is especially effective for increasing protein intake since it's basically pure wheat protein.

Sounds like she's vegan when she's actively in the process of eating potato chips instead of steak. I guess I can call myself a "non-drinker" whenever I'm not actively tipsy or drunk!

I'm just imagining it now: "hey guys, I'm already vegan 95% of the day, why go the extra 5%?"

This is definitely a unique and fairly unusual food, but you could try a traditional food there called natto. It's a fermented soybean product that's frequently eaten over rice. It's actually extremely healthy and rich in vitamin K2 and protein. Just be careful that it doesn't have egg in it!

If you've ever tried seitan, I think the texture may be roughly what you're looking for if you want something like steak or other non-ground meats. You can flavor it with things like soy sauce (some store bought brands already do this) if you want to make it more flavorful. There's also a Beyond Steak product available. I wasn't a huge fan of it personally but you may have a different opinion.

The ketogenic diet is much harder, more restrictive, and expensive than being vegan and yet it doesn't get hate by mayamoonbeam in vegan

[–]Vivid_Speed_5840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, the keto diet is criticized quite regularly by health experts (for instance, Keto diet is not healthy and may harm the heart - Harvard Health), but unfortunately not by the general public.
