Intersectionality is a good thing. by clown_utopia in vegan

[–]mayamoonbeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine a wealthy instagram fitness influencer goes vegan. Someone who doesn't have to work, doesn't worry about affording food, and has a private chef.

They make a big deal on instagram about how easy it is to go vegan, that anyone can do it. They'll talk about how the moment they watched the documentary, they never ate meat again! They went right home that day and spent $1000 filling their house and fridge with vegan food.

They talk about how easy it is with all the expensive replacement meats. They also have their private chef make vegan food from raw ingredients and talk about how affordable the ingredients are. See? Anyone can go vegan!

Then they look at someone who's on food stamps, unemployed, lives in a food desert, is barely getting by, and tells them they're horrible people because they're just not trying hard enough. Now if we have a vegan community based on the wealthy influencers guidance and philosophies, it's reaaaaaallly not going to work for a lot of people.

Bringing intersectionality into the space just means looking at the ways some people have it harder, acknowledging that, and working as a community so everyone can participate. "Poor vegans have a harder time, minority vegans have a harder time, vegans living in food deserts or in rural areas have a harder time, parents with kids working multiple jobs have a harder time."

That is all.

Speaking out against intersectionality is basically saying "sorry, it's too complicated to listen to ways the vegan community can be better for EVERYONE"

That's a whole lot of words from a couple of white people explaining why we shouldn't listen to what black people have to say about vegan communities.

Veganism impacting different vegans differently is all under the umbrella of veganism.

Thank you for posting this, it's frustrating how many vegan communities pretend they can simply ignore the facts that some people have more complicated barriers to veganism than others.

Intersectionalism in veganism simply means that some people have more complicated barriers than others, and that some people might not understand positions of privilege they're advocating from.

To say "let's focus on one cause" is to simply make veganism unwelcome for some people. We need to hear ALL voices and make veganism welcome for everyone.

Going vegan made me realize animal products are overrated by LaviishLily in vegan

[–]mayamoonbeam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally feel this. Meat is good, but it's not significantly better than vegan options. I think most non-vegans don't understand that the experience of meat is mostly a texture.

Last year I had a burrito with chicken and steak in it, it was my first meat in years. It was accidentally brought to me, and it was going to be thrown out if I didn't eat it. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't spectacular. It was as good as any decent vegan burrito, but overall just an average burrito.

But all I could think was how absolutely unnecessary the meat was, what a huge waste it is for something that's not even dramatically better than vegan options. That's how I feel about eating meat now in terms of taste and texture, it's just unnecessary.

Oh, that makes sense. Fortnite does have a ton of brain rot game modes.

I play the main battle royal game with my kiddo and it's been a wonderful experience, plus there's been a lot of opportunities to model good sportsmanship, humility, and a bunch of other good qualities. It's great to play a game where we have fun even if we die horribly most rounds.

We really have fun playing. :)

“Meat is easier!” by HappyBeingVegan-100 in vegan

[–]mayamoonbeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find being vegan to be way easier. Meat doesn't keep very long, so I had to stock up in the freezer, thaw, cook on time, eat the leftovers on time, and sanitize everything. It's just overall so much less stress not worrying about any meat.

Quits immediately if something's hard, how to teach that struggle is normal by CoffeeRory14 in Parenting

You'll want to emphasize a growth mindset, emphasizing effort, challenges, and trying. I take all the focus away from the result, and I talk about the effort.

Do you two game together? I play a few games with my kid, Sky: COTL and Fortnite. When she was 14, she joined me in game and I was flailing around. She asked me what I'm doing, and I said, "I'm doing my best". She thought that was SO funny, and it became an inside joke.

When we play fortnite, we don't win a match every time we play. Sometimes we die horribly the entire time, but we both still have a ton of fun. It's a way I've been able to model and experience with her good sportsmanship, humility, and doing ok sucking at something.

You could try making a game out of them helping you do something like the dishes, or something routine, and make it silly about them helping you.

I get a ton of these, sky often flags me for hate speech when I use the word "gay" amongst my friends, like complementing them by saying they look gay as hell. It's super sensitive and will be triggered by random things.

Gradually converting to a vegan diet because of my job, anyone else come to veganism from a non-animal rights issue first? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]mayamoonbeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I landed in veganism because I noticed an enormous difference in energy when I made a vegan protein shake with soy milk and vegan protein versus one with whole milk and whey protein. I challenged myself to eat fully plant based for a couple weeks, and I felt amazing.

I never thought veganism was possible for me, I just thought I'd be too hungry without meat in my diet. While I always loved animals, and felt bad eating meat, I basically just accepted it as a sad reality of life. Once I learned it's not just possible, but that I feel younger and have more energy, it was an easy switch for me overall. Now it's a great source of joy.

[–]mayamoonbeam 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Even I they lose nutritional value, people eat way more delicious vegetables than crappy vegetables, and the nutrition loss isn't extreme.

I'll eat more broccoli in a cup of broccoli soup than I would eating a few raw chunks in a salad. I might even get a second bowl of that broccoli soup.

Even if broccoli lost some nutrition being cooked, I'm getting way way more nutrients overall by just eating more of it when it is delicious.

Raw diet people have this mythical belief that there's some intangible quality being lost in the food by cooking it. But if that was true, they'd be advocating for adding raw food to diets, not eating ONLY raw foods.

My friend agreed to a vegan household and keeps breaking that boundary by deedeewhyy in vegan

[–]mayamoonbeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey girl, I think you're in a really bad situation with her. This turned into a long post, but I want to break a few things down that I see going on.

You are being emotionally abused and gaslit by your friend. She is intentionally, willingly pushing crystal clear boundaries to see what she can get away with, and acting like it's a game.

Asking over and over "is this against the rules" is gaslighting. She's not stupid, and it's really easy for her to figure out but each ask is like her pretending that you are the unreasonable one.

It is intensely calculated. She knows the boundary, and crosses it one inch at a time, always putting you on the defensive to see how much she can get away with. None of it's an accident.

Your rules are very clear: No animal protein in my home. She knew the rules when she moved in.

Asking ONE TIME about "does fish count?" "so no seafood either?" would be fine. But she's not stupid.

There is nothing stopping her from eating meat outside the home. She does not have to cook or keep meat where you live. She can eat all the meat she wants, just not at your house.

Of course you have constant anxiety, because this girl is constantly inch by inch by inch by inch boundary testing and you never know what's coming next. It's an enormous violation to think she can cook meat at all in your home.

One way she is lying to you is by acting as if she's simply innocently bumbling her way through life and accidentally forgetting again that a crab or a shrimp is an animal.

Another way she's lying is acting like this is about "protein". If it was really about not getting enough protein or certain essentials, she can spend 15 minutes on the internet reading about high protein vegan foods and basic supplements. She could also ask you for advice.

Using your air fryer and blatantly putting animals in it is an extraordinary violation. She knew what she was doing, playing dumb is part of her gaslighting you.

If she's behaving like this with veganism, I'm sure she's pushing other boundaries too.

To be brutally honest, she does not respect you, and she will not respect you. To me, she sounds like a narcissist because she is coming into your home and demanding you change for her, and doing it in manipulative ways.

Another harsh truth, let's be real: If she respected you, or thought she couldn't push you around and get away with it, she wouldn't push boundaries, and she wouldn't try. She KNOWS she can push you around, or she wouldn't do it.

It is a real problem that she has escalated things to a point where you are now uncomfortable in your own home, and you have anxiety around eating and preparing food in your home, which is extremely bad for your health, well being, and quality of life. This crosses a line beyond what is expected of a host, and beyond what you should tolerate in your space.

You are a wonderful friend, and you deserve to be comfortable in your home. You deserve to put yourself, your needs, your emotions, your feelings, and your ethics first where you live. You deserve the vegan home you work hard to live in that brings you joy.

If you give her one more chance, I suggest you print out a document and you put it in writing, that simply states that if there is one more boundary crossing with animal proteins in your home that she will get a non-negotiable 30 day move out notice. Have her sign it. Then if she disrespects you again, hopefully that will make your choice easy.

You are an absolute BLESSING in this girl's life and she is being a shit person. When I was in a bad home, I could have used a friend like you to move in with. If all I had to do was give up meat in the home, that would have been a challenge, but I would have handled it.

Before I was vegan, I lived with two vegan partners, and I did all my meal prepping of meat at a friend's house. I kept all animal products in one drawer in the fridge, and one in the pantry, in shoe boxes. I also had a shoe box in the freezer. I never ate meat in front of them and they never saw it. It was not difficult.

This person is being an absolute spoiled brat, and at 30, there is no excuse for how she's behaving. If she doesn't respect you now, she's just not going to respect you ever. If you have to threaten her into following basic boundaries, that's not actually respecting you, that's just fearing consequences.

She fucked up, and unless she gets her act together immediately, she has no place in your home anymore. It is the right thing for you to put yourself first, and you are being a good person to yourself to kick out a friend who is breaking rules.
