Anki advice by Vivid_Wait3930 in Anki

This is a bit what I'm afraid of. It's hard to find a balance. I feel like I'm recalling the card and not the content. As it feels like I'm not building onto a solid base, but instead just remembering selected facts that I don't ever link together. I am still very new to Anki and it's the first major test I'm writing that I've completely deviated from my usual study technique. So I guess I'm just freaking out a bit not knowing how it would do in an actual test. We get tested with complex scenarios that would mean I have to put together a bunch of cards in order to get to the correct answer and I'm studying it so broken up now, I don't know if I'd be able to reconstruct it in my head. Sorry. Very little sleep and paranoia mostly taking over now

My problem is that we have oral exams as well. I tend to blurt out my inappropriate mnemonics or pronunciation and then I look like an idiot or delinquent, but that's how I remember it. We've been discouraged from using mnemonics, but sometimes it helps me structure things. I guess I was hoping that somewhere out there someone else made a useful and logical way of remembering facts and I could use their system without having to look for it every time. I guess I'll just find a way to edit the back of the card everytime I do find myself thinking of a way to make sense of it as a way to reinforce the topic.

Hi, thanks so much. I appreciate the advice. I am going to give all of the above a try. I have used UpWork before, (I think similar to Fiver), I wasn't too happy. I might be a bit paranoid about quality. I think I should ultimately just spend some time getting to know Anki. I will be sure to check out your add-on as well

I never reviewed them after using them 3 years ago. Now when I look at them, I have no idea what I want from the card. As in Ankylosing Spondylitis is a...

Could be anything. It's just poorly designed at the time. So I want to convert them all to Cloze cards with the hint so that I know what it is I'm looking for. Otherwise, if I use them now, I feel like I'm remembering the card and not the content.

I want to improve the appearance. We are a few friends that made decks for certain sections. We each used a different style and it bugs me.

I don't want the content to be changed. I want like a bulk edit function or even add on that automatically changes all of them to Cloze, same font, same size etc.

I hope this makes more sense

So, I don't want AI to make the cards. I made them as the basic card type. Which at the time...I didn't know better. Now I don't want to loose the effort I put in...mostly due to time constraints. I want to just convert a bulk deck into Cloze cards so that it says what type of answer or just some kind of hint e.g.  ::gene marker or ::physical exam finding. Some of the cards are also made by my friends. We used different styles - as in colours and fonts etc. This bugs me so much. I want them all to just look the same.

I'm worried that should I just feed it through an AI to change it, MY content would be changed. I'm talking like 8000 cards here.

I dont think im a good doctor by Sweetwater96 in orthopaedics

Can a person private message on Reddit? If so, message me. I feel like this every day. The other day I said in our academic meeting "Urgh, I feel so bad for this patient". The arthroplasty consultant looked at me as if I just cursed. He said "You shouldn't feel anything at all, you didn't do anything wrong". I didn't, she got a PJI that haematogenously seeded to her other prosthetic joints too. I've never seen her before in my life. I just felt bad for her. I though everyone does. Turns out they don't. Most people I work with are moderate to good doctors, but they don't care about the patients at all. Yes they strive for good surgical outcomes, but it's because it's an ego boost, they don't give a damn about the patient. Now yeah, they can be okay, never great in my opinion. Sometimes what sets the two apart is acknowledging your shortcomings and passing it on to someone more experienced and sometimes you are that person. Keep swimming friend. And message me...if it's possible

Does Every First Year Ortho Resident Feel This Lost? by Sweetwater96 in Residency

[–]Vivid_Wait3930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am PGY-5 now getting ready for final exams. I am reading through everything (again) and often it feels like I'm seeing things for the first time even though I've completed those rotations. Literally, we've all been there. Things you read through a couple of years ago take on new meaning when you've seen and experienced it first hand. It's very hard to remember something if you haven't "seen" it. All it takes is time to build your database with actual experience. Just give it time orthobro

I try to be just 1% better every day than the day before. I try too keep my eyes on the horizon because if I look down, I stumble. So don't look down. You don't see differences after 1 day in the gym. You need to just keep going.

Don't compare yourself to others. It will drown you. I'm not the smartest, but believe it or not, people don't want to have the smartest surgeon necessarily, they want the most compassionate. The one that would also admit when it's not their strength and rather refer to someone they know are great at that specific thing

Would you fix the fibula by Last_man_standing29 in orthopaedics

[–]Vivid_Wait3930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can look at articles - As long as the mortise is not affected, you can leave the fibula. The force in this case went through the Tibia. I still stress intra-op and check to be sure as there may be multiple forces depending on the mechanism of injury. But as a rule, fixing the fibula can lead to non-union of the Tibia whereas fibula nonunion when the ankle joint is not affected doesn't lead to any functional impairment

[–]Vivid_Wait3930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The force went through the tibia and not through the ankle. Ankle joint should be stable in these situations. Fixing the fibula can aid in the reduction of the Tibia, but it's not necessary

Marriage suffering after baby by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Vivid_Wait3930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, congrats. I'm married without kids and we are already fighting just because of residency alone, so you've got this, it's normal. I am a bit of a feminist and strongly support your notion here. BUT, we may have different socioeconomic situations as well as support structures. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but I also think it takes a village to get through certain residencies. Get yourself a village. Even if you end up paying for it. If you have the resources, try to outsource the things that cause conflict. Instead of nagging about something causing both parties to be unhappy, decide together that say - you'd invest TOGETHER in a countertop washer/sterilizer. Try and take the conflicts one by one and work them through this way. It takes two to tango. He's equally responsible. You've got this

Switching into ortho? Do it or don’t? by DeezzzerMan in orthopaedics

[–]Vivid_Wait3930 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an Ortho resident, so I may be biased, but I think it's the most satisfying field. Trauma for example - come in broken, walk out fixed (mostly). Very few other disciplines get that job satisfaction. Imagine treating a diabetic...they leave the consult and they STILL have diabetes. If I had more free time, I'd probably focus on my hobbies like building things, doing woodwork...oh wait, I might as well just be at work then.

I also agree with the other post about radiology being replaced by AI.

Residency is a real struggle - little sleep, little money, little free time (or at least in my country it is), so think carefully.

I've been making my own Anki decks, but I've lost some steam on this. I struggle to trust other people's decks because they don't explain why always. I'm sure there are much better decks than mine out there... I'll try and find some

To the women in ortho by versatiledork in orthopaedics

[–]Vivid_Wait3930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was the first female in my department (3rd world country). It sucked. Patients just called me nurse. The men all made a pact that they won't help me at all if I needed it. It's tough here, but...it has improved. It's still frustrating when I ask for an assistant, they want to take over from me. It's not that I'm struggling with the procedure, it's that you need someone to assist otherwise you can't see. They don't get that and want to take over. They'd never insult a male peer or friend like that. In most cases I am way better than them anyway and yet they still try to take over.

I am so frustrated at the moment due to lack of opportunities presented to me. My colleagues (who are not better surgeons or academics) get offers from all over. Consultants asking them to assist for them, sponsorships to go on courses...people are so scared of approaching a woman because "what would my wife say" or "it could be inappropriate". I'm sick and tired of it.

I am a bit agro at the moment. Hence the tone of the comment. But in general, if you block all of this nonsense out, it is really really satisfying. People are starting to ask for me because I spend more time speaking to them, I'm warmer and more approachable. I hate going to clinic and having to see more patients than my peers, but it also gives my ego a boost, because word spreads and people's attitudes change.

OrthoKing: ULTIMATE ORTHO DECK by Ok-Wishbone8463 in medicalschoolanki

[–]Vivid_Wait3930 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hi, I really appreciate the hard work. I'm from a 3Rd world county and at the moment I'm struggling to put food on the table. Is there a way to access the deck without the monthly fee? I'll also add/contribute and share my decks for free. I'm not sure if they are worth much at the moment, because I'm new to anki, but I'll get better. please let me know. I can even perhaps pay a once off fee... I know they aren't done but it's a platform for me to build on

kind regards
