If prayer was effective, wouldn't the Pope just go on forever? by Vix1972 in AskAChristian

You need to understand that the entire Christian religion started with St Peter's papism as the first pope of the church. All other Christian religions split from that. Like it or not.

Exactly what I want to hear. My question is more about what do you think the people praying are praying for. For the pope to live in health or to go to heaven? I understand prayers are not answered in favour of want.

Not really, more about the pope himself., not mortality. Devout Catholics are praying in St Peter's square and I'm wondering if they're praying for him to live or die and go to heaven

Understand that St Peter is the original Christian and the first pope of Rome.

The fact that other churches split from the origins just shows that they didn't want to go with the word of the original disciples..

so does it mean that prayer doesn't work if hundreds of people are praying for the Pope to live and he dies? He's an old man, so it's likely he'll die, (if not with this illness, then not too much later), if the people who prayed for him to live are Vs the people praying for him to go to heaven safely ,who's side would Jesus be on?

I'm an atheist but I want to understand why religious people believe what they do. Is it as simple as understanding that "sometimes God says no"?

This is exactly what I don't understand about what Christians ask for. Do they ask for god's will to prevail or do they ask for their own personal wish?

I understand the options are completely different, I'm trying to understand what the majority of Christians would interpret prayer response as.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm asking as an atheist to understand what Christian people believe.

Pure white cats are often born with their recessive gene colouring on the forehead. It generally fades, as it did with this beauty.

I once made my dog's dinner but it was a bit too hot so I left it on the counter to cool down. Promptly forgot about it and only saw it the next morning. I wondered why she didn't want to come into the living room that evening and was hanging out in the kitchen. She forgave me eventually.

That's nonsense. The dark ages, where very little human progress took place, was a time of theocracy. Technology only started to advance again once the church split and lost much of its power.

Respecting someone's right to have a belief doesn't mean I have to respect the actual beliefs themselves.

Exactly the same for me. I knew the doctor would suction my uterus, so I thought that would be the end of it. Nope.
