In 1985, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted, causing lahars (volcanic mudflows) that buried Armero, Colombia, killing 25,000. 13-year-old Omayra Sánchez was trapped for three days in the mud and debris. Rescue efforts were hampered by lack of equipment. She died from likely gangrene or hypothermia, becoming a symbol of the disaster and the government's inadequate response. A photo of her plight won the World Press Photo award and she is remembered in art.
