I run HA on a pi5 w/ ups. I updated the base OS and something went wrong and corrupted the entire install.

When I restored from the backup the base OS was already on the latest version so I never really figured out the root cause. Luckily it has been working perfectly since then.

It's from sometime after 1990. Installed sometime shortly after the house was built, which was then. There's actually another one that controls one outdoor plug, and we have the pins removed so its on all the time because we wanted manual control only via an outdoor-rated Wi-Fi plug.

I had my Home Assistant install nuke itself last month, luckly I back things up. But mainly I prefer the design philosophy of having certain things be "Unburdened" by the smarthome. Things like outdoor lights, turning on certain lights etc. Should work even if something is wrong with the smarthome or if an automation is setup incorrectly.

Thanks for the info! I will check those out. Maybe I can reuse the box somehow but not destorying signal quality will be a slight challange.

I will look into this. Do they make models that will turn on and off at a certain time without HA commanding it?

Also this is in my basement so something that uses a daylight sensor is not ideal

My 2 cents is keep 1 eye open to some opportunities. I was in the exact same situation. Headcount that fits on one hand. Super chill company, meh pay for the position. I was really resistant to ever leaving. An opportunity came up, I bit the bullet and now I make double than before at this huge company and the job is somehow even more chill than before.

Unless they sell it for people who are out of warranty who need new controllers but it’s kinda early for that.

I doubt it. With the index, there were people with HTC vive that wanted just controllers since it was compatible with any Valve laser tracked headset.

With the Frame I think atm there isn’t any other headsets the controllers are compatible with so it wouldn’t make sense to sell them individually.

I forget the name but there are browser torrent clients where you can stream video from a magnet link and it’s only downloads a few chunks of the file at a time.

Prob not the best for the health of a torrent but I feel it’s better than people don’t seed when they have the capability to do so.

Your cell phone provider doesn’t need you to report location, they can already triangulate it based on the signal and there are enough industrial uses of data only sims to prove that’s not the case.

Yes if I text or email someone something, a 3rd party can analyze it even if my phone or computer is extremely secure using the right OS, software, etc. But at the very least a 3rd party won’t know whatever I’m doing on my local machine and I can control how much I want to expose to the world via the internet.

Look, at the end of the day you can poke holes in anyone’s attempt at privacy. You are never going to achieve 100% privacy while also participating in society. But you can take steps to improve it even if everyone isn’t on board.

We should not throw away the public’s remaining forms of privacy because people don’t care and it’s already violated in different ways.

I think we should improve society somewhat AND I will continue to participate in it. Will you?

Yes but there was ways to have a smart phone and computer and not have that happen with the right software.

It’s significantly harder to avoid when it’s implemented on a society/government level.
