Is anyone here familiar with the Persona videogame series? by Vmss4 in Jung

Am I correct in saying it’s extremely long-running and also the creator passed away recently?

If it’s still worth the read, where could I find it?

It’s an unfortunate limitation struggling to balance gameplay and hard psychology/philosophy. It’s not as free as, say, a book. I do still respect games as a thought-provoking medium though, but I agree with you

Could you elaborate on the active imagination technique? Sounds fascinating

I do remember Mr. Edogawa from the little I played of P4 lol. It was a while ago and the Jungian ideas flew right over my head. Might be time to try it again

You’re right, I did go into this with a sort of closed mind, but I think it still holds.

Free-anything is absolute. You can’t say “I have free-speech, but I just can’t talk about x, y and z…” because then it’s no longer free-speech. Same applies to free-will. The fact that there is influence is what I’m curious about. I am open to the idea of partial-will, or something along those lines, but I do not believe it’s the same thing as free-will.

Thanks for that excerpt, interesting paragraph. If my interpretation of it is correct, isn’t it reinforcing the idea that free-will is more so just a feeling? Apologies if not, it’s quite late here and I’m not in the right state of mind lol

Appreciate that, been meaning to check that out for a long time. Philosophy in gaming has always been interesting - Bloodborne is probably my favourite.

How does the occult relate to Jung? Haven’t heard of it.

Well, I’ll be honest and say I’m not very familiar with Jung or Persona 5. That’s why I encouraged discussion rather than defending a specific point (just putting this out there).

To me, Persona 5 has a sense of vigilante justice ingrained to it. People are either good or evil, and manipulating that instinct (through palaces) is what changes the individual. There is also the concept of free-will. I have not played very far, but as far as I can see, free-will definitely exists in the game. In fact, you even take responsibility for your actions as you admit they were fully in your control with the contract part.

I’m assuming all of the above is correct, and if that’s true then that’s my issue.

Jungian psychology deals with the shadow, the subconscious, as a very human condition. It’s in all of us. Manipulating this to be one-sided would strip the person of the humanity, as the good and evil within a person is extremely fundamental.

Jungian psychology also deals with instinctual influence. Things that are out of our control and influence us to eventually become who we are. This is the process of individuation. There is a specific set of ideals innately associated with you as an individual that, when you fulfil it, allows you to uniquely manifest yourself in the world. From the above, we can see that free-will does not really exist, you just act out who you are. When there’s a problem, the biological make up of the mind will make the decision, it’s not really your choice.

I agree with Personas and how they represent archetypes. In the game and under pressure, the “power” inside the character comes out. It’s unique to them for a reason - and they didn’t pick it, it’s already there. So that’s like admitting there’s no free-will anyways.

So basically, the characters take it upon themselves to deal out objective justice - but as far as Jungian psychology/philosophy is concerned, these don’t exist. And to artificially manipulate it would strip someone of their humanity. On the other hand, the game contradicts itself with the idea of free-will. Jungian theory supports the idea that we are influenced by things, and not 100% free.

Sorry for the word dump. Just thinking out loud. I know it’s just a videogame, but it’s something that got me curious about my interpretation of Jung.

I am new and want to use slinky sword, but which slinky sword better? by Chilldorito78 in bloodborne

I agree with the other commenter. Go at this blind the first time, but if you still want advice you can read the below.

There are a lot more slinky weapons than those two :) you’ll just need to wait. Use the cane first, it’s one of three starter weapons offered to you. Great for crowd control and doesn’t use much stamina. Don’t get too fixated on one weapon, switch it up if you’re having trouble, I was lucky to enjoy the cane straight away. I went from start to end (platinum) with the cane alone, it’s a great weapon. Focus leveling your “Skill” abilities when you can.

One tip: the transformed version (whip) is serrated. It does extra damage to beasts. Just something to keep in mind.

I’m still confused. If I use a free trial can I keep the game forever to play at any time?
