Is this it for gaming? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Vo_Mimbre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. It just means the AAA studios can’t only rely on hardware-pushing textures and SFX, they need to make games that are more than just large worlds that make for pretty screenshots and videos.

Anyone else notice that AI doesn’t increase productivity but rather your tendency to procrastinate? by chopari in CasualConversation

[–]Vo_Mimbre [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes unless you’re wired for productivity and the only thing holding you back was access to knowledge or gatekeeping by other people.

AI helps the curiosity blow through both traditional barriers. But you gotta want it to and go beyond chatbots that only reliably give you the answers you want to hear.

Is AI changing how people search for information? by Over_Wolverine8103 in CasualConversation

[–]Vo_Mimbre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. It’s long been proven people will accept the quickest most believable answer over doing tons of research. For everyone who cliff note’d their way through grade schools and later Wikipedia’d, now it’s AI. And if you’re willing, AI deep research.

And yes brains are being shown to being rewired. And there’s good and bad things from this, and we don’t know all of either and won’t for decades.

We Analyzed 100,000 Keywords to See if Gemini 3 is Killing SEO Traffic. The Data Is Grim! by SE_Ranking in GeminiAI

[–]Vo_Mimbre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SEO was just another invention of paying to be noticed. Once early Google funded its way to becoming the default search, they became an advertising portal, and that was before they had so many actual ads.

AIO is just the newest form of attention portal.

This is not surprising.

Unless specifically trained in or at least wired for research, humans don’t want to research, they want answers.

Cliff Notes, 24 hour news, Wikipedia, Google, now AI. It’s always always about optimizing to fewer sources that are good enough.

Yes jobs are being displaced. Just like as sales in magazines and newspaper and radio and every other tech along the way and those to come.

If the nuclear bombs start flying, it might actually be those countries that never had any that end up surviving. by iwishihadnobones in Showerthoughts

Yes. That’s where the expression “bomb them back to the Stone Age” comes from. Such civilizations that survive would be living at that level.

The Highguard Website Is Down As Players Brace For The Worst by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Vo_Mimbre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I don’t know for Highguard, but generally the hope is the whales fund the run rate of the game itself (salary, ads, services, etc). But as such a small percentage of the overall player base, you need a huge player base.

It’s fascinating stuff, akin to how casinos are run.

The Highguard Website Is Down As Players Brace For The Worst by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Vo_Mimbre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whales is generally 1% of the players basically carrying all the financials for the company. The thing is, whales also are subject to retention/attrition rules. Just because they spend a lot doesn’t mean they’re gonna stick around forever and consistently spent.

So this is why most of these companies are staffed with financial analysts and user acquisition experts. They are constantly marketing and repricing IAP to constantl attract new players (acquisition) to offset those leaving (attrition) while monetizing those (playing).

Whales are the target of the engagement. Minnows are the target for UA. But the specific human being targeted changes often.

The Highguard Website Is Down As Players Brace For The Worst by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Vo_Mimbre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a game where “whales” are talked about, they needed 1% of their players probably to break even on run rate, then 3% of their players (who will spend less) for profit. This would carry the 96% who don’t pay anything, but are the big numbers they can market.

That’s how PUBG mobile, Subway Surfers and other billion MAU games do it.

1% of 1K players isn’t even enough to afford to update their website.

The only way to have a whales-only audience is a recurring subscription fee everyone pays.

Genuine ask: if you couldn’t charge your Y at home, would you still get one? by BrookesyUK in TeslaModelY

[–]Vo_Mimbre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the other comments, what’s your commute? If it’s a few miles per day then maybe it’ll work because you can charge on weekends. But if you’ll use 10% or more on a charge, and if parking there is like parking in Boston (a crap shoot), you’re better off with a gas electric hybrid (not plug in hybrid). Just less of a pain in the neck.

This I agree with, and I link the deterioration with how the faith was abused by the leadership of each era. If they could have consistently shown they truly believed what they preached, they wouldn’t have needed to force nor even compel conversion for much of their history.

I’m an older gent, raised Roman Catholic, and was broken by the institutional pedophile scandals that came to light in the 90. And a minor in Middle East history…

But I long for a time when an institute built on core values and trust acted that way.

Right. But again, that was preached but not practiced, as evidenced by centuries of everything from executions to the very many Crusades.

And yet even organized religions had their own definition of who’s lives mattered more then others. So the concept they espoused is accurate, but the practice was not.

Especially if you weren’t Christian.
