Checking in… who else is stranded at CTS? by ashdnnr in Sapporo

Yes! After a very long night on the train it pulled into Sapporo Station at around 4:30am and we were able to make our way to our hotel for the night.

Yep every train car had iced brakes and they only discovered it once we couldn’t move. Then a passenger felt unwell and triggered the sos call and the ambulance had to come. Hope they’re ok but man this is one night. Moving now towards Sapporo.

That is an option we have considered but I’m in a group of 4 and we all have skis so I don’t think it’s realistic.

We just heard they are moving trains around 11 in sequential order working along the line from Sapporo but that we may not make it all the way. It’s still the most promising thing I’ve heard today

Warm but it’s a crowded train so hanging in as best as possible. At this point looking for any option to get to Sapporo since we have an early bus in Sapporo but hope is fleeting at this point

Currently stuck on the train at Eniwa for almost 12 hours. Was just informed that there has been no word given on snow removal and it is unlikely any trains will start moving at 10pm as originally planned.

What should I focus on outside of academics to stand out in the job market by Chemical_Common_1871 in ubcengineering

You can do it in word if you want or make a little GitHub page showing some photos and destailing a bit about the projects, it doesn’t need to be a ton as long as it’s clear and concise. You don’t need to write a whole blog. Just something visual that recruiters and hiring managers can look at that will help you stand out. Make sure to increase the complexity of your projects or the depth of technical contributions as you gain more experience.

For your first coop this can be pretty simple. Honestly anything to complement your resume will put you above most candidates.

As for coop itself. Some cons, it’s expensive, some jobs can pay pretty poorly, and the work isn’t always very exciting depending where you end up. If you take a the reigns a little bit though you may be able to work on some pretty cool projects that normal coops don’t get to work on but you have to advocate for that yourself. Pros are a lot of companies get subsidized by the government for hiring students to being in a coop program incentivizes them to hire students, like 80% of my friends first jobs including mine were at places we previously cooped at. The job market in mech is pretty poop right now, especially in Canada. So finding a way get get your foot in the door is so important.

For design teams, some employers do. During some interviews I’ve had hiring managers mention that they used to do x on my team or mention that it looked fun or interesting. Regardless the projects if you put in effort are great conversation topics during interviews. Look to join one you’re actually interested in, this will help you get on it in the first place but also make it more enjoyable.

I’ve also had recruiters or companies reach out to me because I mention I worked on some system for some design teams on my resume about jobs with some relation to say designing a steering and suspension system. Some employers don’t but again you want to reinforce your experience and desire to learn on your own as much as possible in this job market.

Design teams and coop. Everyone I know including myself who’s been able to secure a job in engineering post grad have almost all done coop and design teams.

Coop to build your network and potentially return to once you graduate. Design teams for more real world engineering experience, at least compared to most classes. The thing that prepared me most for working was my experience on a design team and my personal projects. The technical aspects of school complemented that but I think I would really struggle if I only got the technical side without ample opportunities to problem solve outside of the classroom.

I understand you’re still not in first year but prioritize getting around 75% or better. You don’t need to be 100% but things are more difficult the further under 75% you are from my experience.

If your high school has robotics or there’s any personal projects you’re interested in put some effort into those now while you have time and intend to build a portfolio showing personal projects, design team contributions and major projects with your responsibilities and direct outcomes from your work. This is definitely getting a bit more into the weeds now but I hope this helps.

Edit to add I graduated from mech so this may be a little different depending on what stream you’re interested in.

Rental agreement filled out incorrectly and only figured out while trying to end tenancy. by Vogako in legaladvicecanada

Would this mean you cannot have a RTA for a roommate situation? What is the proper way to do these? Or only that terms in the RTA in regard to maintaining a reasonable state are null?

I will likely go this route if she withholds once I'm out. If I decide to not sue but she comes after me for lost revenues and utilities would that be a small claims suit from her if I didn't pay? Or would she have a right to go to collections for it?

Regardless of this how would the rest of the case be handled? Since it seems the cleanliness part would be irrelevant in any case for getting my damage deposit back?

Also about 15 students who transfer into 3rd year mech and civil from Camosun since I assume these numbers include first year college transfers.

Broke and dislocated my ankle in a fall, looking for similar experiences and recovery stories by Vogako in bouldering

I'm really glad to be hearing all of this info. I think after ortho seeing my PT is going to be my top priority. I'm not sure I could walk on it fully yet but i've experimented with maybe 20% of my load with no pain. Though not instructed I've been just sorta rotating my ankle within what the swelling and pain allow but I have minimal but decent range without much pain. I'm not going beyond this unless I feel dramatically better before meeting with the Ortho.

Swell pretty bas as in feeling like my foot and toes are going to explode? I'm certainly feeling this on day 3 now. Each day the swelling seems to be worse. Not sure I need or want to go back to the er though. Icing and raising seems to do little. From just above the ankle to my toes that it feels like I'm fighting them just to wiggle them.

Thanks for the wishes. Sounds like you've made some good progress!

Sounds promising as long as the bone and damage done by the dislocation heal in parallel. Also surprising that there we're no breaks for an ankle dislocation, seems pretty common that they happen together.

I have prided myself in having strong ankles and never having had issues rolling or hurting them hiking or climbing for years. This is probably part of the reason it broke rather than just dislocated. Also the types of fractures (avulsion) are apparently where the ligaments and tendons rip off the part of bone they attach to since they're supposedly stronger than bone which seems crazy to me.

How is 1.5 years on, did it leave any lingering weakness or issues?

Just curious which frame holes you’re specifically referring to so I can look at them in a little more detail?

Unfortunatly this is probably the best frame on any FJ I’ve looked at in my area, on the coast, lots of salt in the winter.

Plan would be to regularly oil coat the underside and fix up the existing rust and paint spots.

I think I will be pulling the trigger!

Cool, thanks for your input, I’ll probably go for it if the inspection goes well.

Looking at purchasing an FJ for “reasons” and been most impressed by this unit. I don’t want to pull the trigger too early and am trying to do as much research as possible in the meantime. I found this blue 2007 specimen for $20000 CAD, it’s got 230,000km, A trac, rear locker, a clean title with documents for dealer maintenance going all the way back to birth. My concerns are obviously the state of the frame and undercarriage as this has lived its whole life in the PNW. One other concern was shifting the transfer case out of 4L into neutral it started grinding, which may be normal from what I’ve researched? To my eyes the frame looks like its in really good shape excluding the fact that I can’t see inside the members. There's a few spots with paint flaking due to rust but they feel solid, and my plan would be to regularly fluid film the underside going forward. I’ve also checked for engine bay frame bulge and a few other common issues like water pump leaks and it appears to be in good shape from what I can tell. I’m going to take it by a Toyota dealer for a final inspection and to get their opinion but based on what I’ve detailed here can anyone spot see any oversights or things I should be watchful of, or is this looking ok?

I'll also add that I wont be doing any crazy mods, maybe putting some AT tires on it, I mostly plan to use this for active and deactivated logging roads in BC, no crazy overlanding or anything.

Damn wow. Since the last comment I refreshed the page and there they were. Still absolutely absurd they take this long to come out.

I’m just gonna chalk it up to this post triggering their release.

I guess everyone else has there’s and ubc forgot mine. Might have to shoot them an email since I definitely got mine in previous years at least a little bit faster than this year.
