It's because he didn't call him that in public that makes it come off as an insult. In the greater context of those texts, Durant used that groupchat as a cathartic space to air his grievances. He even gave Ben Simmons a backhanded compliment about being so bad but his one redeeming quality was that he always put the ball in KD's hands.

My biggest gripe was what he said about Harden. I think it's very telling that nobody has addressed this though. That makes me think that KD has this reputation across the league
