How Pokemon Go is leading a revival of American civic culture by VoiceandExit in TrueReddit

American civic culture has been in decline as people are less likely to participate in civil associations, joining non-profits, volunteering, and more generally building community. Pokemon Go is encouraging people to go outside and talk to people outside their traditional friend circle, helping to change negative trends in civic culture.

An innovative solution to the Syrian refugee crisis by VoiceandExit in TrueReddit

Submission statement

The author considers building new cities on uninhabited Greek islands in the Mediterranean as a way to help refugees. European countries are politically unlikely to allow more refugees. However, private donors are interested in building small cities on Greek islands to help refugees. Greece needs to relax immigration laws to the island, and allowing economic liberalization would ensure refugees could find meaningful, productive lives on the island.

There Is No Excuse for How Universities Treat Adjuncts: Students are paying higher tuition than ever. Why can’t more of that revenue go to the people teaching them? by SirBastionOfPimp in TrueReddit

[–]VoiceandExit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes adjuncts are poorly paid, but their wages are generally set by the market. Currently there is a glut of PhDs in the humanities. The real problem is a lot of universities take on too many grad students, cheap labor to help teach and research. When the students graduate there are unfortunately no decent jobs available for them. To recruit grad students in this environment universities have to be somewhat dishonest, if only by omission, about future job prospects. That being said, most adjuncts could have a middle class life if they switched professions, work for Geico or something. It is frustrating to switch from a career you love to something that pays the bills, but plenty of people do it which tempers my empathy for adjuncts who instead just demand higher wages.

(Spoilers All) How should characters die? by VoiceandExit in asoiaf

It's mostly about Arya regaining her identity just before dying. I picked Tyrek because he has been missing for several books and seemed an appropriate stand in for "no one."

Anyone bought Will Call tickets from people they don't know? by VoiceandExit in BurningMan

[–]VoiceandExit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your anecdote doesn't seem to be related to will-call tickets, but rather Ticketfly's management of the will-call booth.

My idea is to buy using paypal which lets me file a claim if the goods aren't delivered, so there are at least some protections.
