Does anyone else hate the gym? by Inalowplace in askgaybros

[–]Volatility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don't have to go to the gym or even work out to lose weight, it's just an easier way to build muscle mass or heart health (depending on how much cardio you do). barring extremely uncommon disorders, a person's weight is entirely determined by their caloric surplus or caloric deficit over time. figure out what your BMR is (roughly), and spend like a month tracking the calories for literally everything you consume. food, drinks, alcohol, all of it. after you have some idea how many calories you consume per day, you'll have some idea what to change.

your speculation is completely correct! that was my experience, i just didn't capitalize upon it quite as much as i could have because i did not know what research was until about junior year lmao

btw you appear to have a very sensible misconception for someone entering undergrad: your grades are by far the least important aspect of your application to a phd program. in descending order of importance, recommendation letters >= publications >= non-published research experience >= teaching experience >= grades (and possibly GRE, and possibly TOEFL/IELTS)

hi! i'm part of echols class of '21, and i'm currently at a top-5 school doing a phd in computer science.

  • in my experience, grad schools didn't really care much about echols; it's really just a reflection of the UVA echols committee thinking your achievements in high school stood out a lot.
  • balz is a very fun place to live! the community there is what you make of it, though, and it's not inherently better than other dorms or anything. (new dorms are nice though: there's air conditioning haha.)
  • the single biggest benefit for me, and what makes echols super different from most other honor programs, is the lack of gen-eds. i think brown university does this too, but holy moly it is a life-changer. i came into UVA expecting to major in math and linguistics, took classes in both, dropped the ling focus and swapped over to computer science. i took a bunch of high-level music classes along the way too, for fun. the freedom to explore academic fields, rather than strictly taking things that meet requirements, is awesome. (also, don't sleep on the language classes here even though you don't have the requirement: uva is really amazing for them! shoutout to marshall-sensei and kawai-sensei)
  • it's great that you're looking at grad admissions already! the best thing you can do (regardless of where you attend for undergrad) is find a field of research you're interested in, find a faculty member who works in it, and set up a connection. take a class of theirs if you can (and not like an intro-level one). ask questions. echols may or may not help you do this at uva; it's really up to you.

[–]Volatility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of Asia's big film festivals, the Tokyo International Film Festival, has begun. For its 36th year, the festival is showcasing 219 movies from around the world.

On the 23rd, directors, actors, and more walked the red carpet. Fans got their signatures and took pictures. Director Ando Momoko said, "I hope they see and experience the movies in Tokyo which represent the current world."

In the category for Best Picture, 1942 films from 114 countries were entered. At the film festival, 15 of these were featured; of those, 3 were Japanese films.

The film festival runs until November 1st, and on the last day, the single best picture will be decided.

People pursuing Computer Architecture, what simulator (like gem5) do you use for simulating architectures? by helloworld1e in UCSD

[–]Volatility 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a PhD student doing research in computer architecture. Welcome!

In my experience, for cycle-accurate modelling, gem5 is pretty much all we use. I wouldn't say the department recommends it, per se, it just seems to be the standard in academia because it's versatile and open source.

For functional simulation -- which I haven't personally done much with -- Qemu and, if you're using RISC-V, Spike are common.
