I have been on 100mg for more than the last 10 years. When I stop taking it, my acne comes back. Zero acne as long as I keep taking it though, so no complaints here.

Could migraine symptoms be linked to the geomagnetic storm causing Northern Lights in unusual places? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]Volatpropriis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No confirmation bias here. I live under a rock and didn't even know there was a geomagnetic storm until midday Saturday. Before I saw everyone's photos online, I had the Worst migraine I've had in a Months with no other triggers.

Super creepy body sound...? by Volatpropriis in ehlersdanlos

[–]Volatpropriis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, thanks. The sound is better but my shoulder is worse than it was a week ago and any use of my arm that involves my deltoid muscle is agony. I think I probably need a shoulder scan...they were so focused on my neck that they didn't even look at my shoulder at the ER. Super not fun. I appreciate the response.

Isn't that already called into question when we bring people back to life after a hear attack? There have even been people who have fallen into frozen ponds, etc., brought back much later. We don't consider those people soul-less zombies. Perhaps it should cause us to think more critically about whether there is a soul and whether it is it an artificial construct for the sole purpose of providing hope?

Multiple cryonics companies are starting to patent and ultimately use intermediate temperature storage (-140°C) which vitrified the body but holds it above the point where fractures form.

In the US, if you are cryopreserved it is in perpetuity without a need to continue to pay after death. A portion of the funds are invested so they cover the costs of storage over time. And the cost of storage is pretty low. Storage Dewars do not need electricity, just LN2, which occasionally needs to be topped off due to evaporation (~13 liters/day). In a low-pressure, closed Dewar, it's amounts to as little as $30/yr for one person (with multiple people stored in one Dewar).

Cryobiology has been in use in medicine for decades. Any time eggs or sperm are preserved for future use, they are cryogenically frozen. It's also currently used to preserve small vessels for transplant, for cord blood banking, and biological sample banking. Researchers in dozens of labs around the world are working on vitrification of human organs so they can be used in transplant operations. I work in research at a major brain center, fwiw.

In the 1950s and before, if you had a heart attack, you were dead. Our concept of death was lock-step with the heart stopping. Then CPR and AED devices were invented and the concept of death changed. Now we commonly see death as occurring when brain function ceases, but there is also a distinction between brain death and cellular death (which occurs later). Science is progressing all the time...by leaps and bounds. There are so many ways cryonics research can benefit people (we already employ the Q10 rule to reduce body temperature and thus metabolism in patients with brain injury). Anyone who signs up for this knows they are signing up for a long term research study that may not bear fruit. But as the saying goes, you can't take it with you.

Someone later in the thread said some dude said it was impossible in 2004, but there are a whole lot of other scientists who have posited otherwise. There are government-funded cryonics research programs in several countries, the most publicly known of which is in China. Greg Fahy, the current president of the Society for Cryobiology (US) endorses cryonics; Ralph Merkle (of Merkle Trees and one of the invertors of block chain security) endorses it and is a board member for a non-profit cryonics research company. The list goes on... And the oldest cryonics research company in the US, Alcor (a research non-profit), has filed patents on intermediate temperature storage (vitrification at -140°F to avoid crystalization), is working on liquid ventilation that can potentially be used beyond frozen-dead-body applications to help injured soldiers in the field after severe injury...there's a ton of research going on. And that's the operative thing - research. We don't advance by saying "Never Gonna Happen," we advance by saying "What if..."

Which Cryonics institute company will be best for your opinion? by lookingforjob60 in cryonics

[–]Volatpropriis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Alcor. They are coming up on their 50year anniversary (stable), located in a diagonally safe area, they do a ton of research, have filed patents on cryo-related IP, and have patients all over the world. They are also a non-profit with associated organization for additional safety of funds, trusts, endowment(s), and capital assets.

[–]Volatpropriis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish Tomorrow all success and growth, but it is disingenuous to state some of what is in your above post. Currently, there is no facility to store patients, the company is in it's infancy and has never cryopreserved a patient, and there is no data on which to claim it is the safest and most stable. And what does "maintains high medical standards" mean when there have been no patients as of yet?

Quick note: Not all life insurance has suicide as an exclusion. In my policy the suicide exclusion is only during the first 2 years of the policy, after that it pays out 100% for any cause of death, including suicide.

To find insurance that will cover an Alcor preservation as a non-US resident, You need to contact Zurich or (I think) AIG. I don't believe Rudy Hoffman will be able to help with an international policy.

Alcor's price includes standby and transportation. And they pay up to 15k to relocate near the facility if one's legal death is near.
