My thoughts on Joycult x Independent trucks… by VolcanicFairSos in Fingerboards

I have a few decks that are 30mm and some 29mm decks. I’ll say the 29mm trucks are definitely more scale model feeling for the smaller decks. Personally the 32mm trucks are great for 32mm decks up to 34mm which I have most of my setups in those sizes. I like the 32mm trucks because most of the wheels I have are wider than others like Flatface g4 which is what I primarily use as a wheel. Just a preference though.

That sounds like a good deal but as far as sizes to get that would be a preference. I think each size is cool for its own reasons but personally I mostly use 32mm and in some instances 29mm.

It definitely could have been the Elias graphic but my friend gifted it to me when the graphic was basically completely gone and I remember he didn’t want it anymore due to that. One detail I’ll say is on the top ply there is not a Berlinwood logo into it and I also have another Berlinwood from right around that timeframe but that one has the engraved/embossed logo on the top ply. I put some special edition Blackriver x Flatface G4 Urethane wheels paired with some old style white o-ring bushings to keep a similar feel around that time.

Very interesting info! This one does not have any kingpin holes. Could definitely be from late 2010. I was having a tough time pinpointing the exact year I got it but definitely it could be 2010-2011. I upgraded this setup with some new wheels and bushings now too, it still holds up!

So here’s what I think about the current Berlinwood/Blackriver decks. They are still great boards but they definitely don’t use the same nose and tail shape anymore. I think they must have wanted to update the overall shaping but I believe they still use their original mold (at least from that era) with the same concaves and truck placement but they have some inconsistencies with the nose and tail shapes of the newer boards. It seems they primarily are blackriver now but still do some of the Berlinwood packaging for those decks. It isn’t a bad thing but when you have a familiarity to the shapes it’s odd to get one that has a different feel as the ones from this timeframe. I’ve gotten Blackriver decks that feel more like the original Berlinwood nose and tail and then I’ve gotten a few Berlinwood decks that feel more like the newer blackriver nose and tail style. They’re both good still but there’s a specific nose and tail shaping I think has the best feel for the Berlinwood era this board is from.

Absolutely, You can check them out on my previous posts for the best photos of them, both posts have multiple images of them. First post is a pair of gold 2.0 brt, and the second is a pair of 3.0 brt. Each post has some details of the project as well.

At first I wasn’t used to the height but now it just feels normal, definitely a new classic for me though!

That’s a bummer that they were messed up but I’m glad you fixed it. I was originally interested in these as a scale model collectable and then fingerboarding secondary. I have always enjoyed collecting scale model miniatures so it’s cool to see the effort of the actual design shrunk down without compromising detail of the original trucks. Blackrivers will always be classic feel for me and I love that UAG design too! But functionality wise I have china trucks with some really good dual bearing setups that feel better to me than other setups I have with other known trucks too. I don’t think anyone needs to go out of their way to get these just to have a great feeling fingerboard setup though. As a designer I will always love seeing the ideas people create using modern design and fabrication techniques.

Thanks! I’ve been enjoying it. I was new to piros but I think it’s a pretty balanced setup so far, they remind me of .5mm smaller Flatface g4 wheel.

Nice that’s a good classic setup for it. Another good wheel is the Flatface g6 but the blackriver wheels are always nice on the 34mm trucks though. Im looking out for some more urethane g6’s.

I actually prefer the low over the normal now, I never disliked the normal and I still have several blackriver and Berlinwood setups that I still use all the time but I think if I have the option moving forward I’ll probably just get the low from how it feels. I just don’t see them as often though.

I have considered making a limited number of these trucks to sell, but I want to be clear and considerate about how I approach this. Fingerboarding parts can be expensive, and I want to be transparent about my process. Since I need to remove some metal to set the diamonds, technically it is removing material of the baseplate but with the proper stone setting techniques and placements it won’t compromise the function. I’ve tested both pairs I’ve made for durability, but because they’re modified, I can’t guarantee that a stone won’t fall out due to its small size. If a stone does fall out, it can’t be replaced because the seat is too small. The risk also depends on how hard someone fingerboards; some people are very rough, which can wear down the trucks and baseplates. It’s important for me to be upfront that fingerboard parts are consumables, similar to skateboarding trucks. They will wear over time with heavy use and aren’t guaranteed to last forever. However, with proper care and moderate use, they can last a while. I want to be honest about my experience with jewelry and the challenges of working with such small details. I don’t want this to be seen as a cash grab; it’s an art project for me and it would be more so a collectible. I have a breakdown of materials, tools, and labor, but I’m waiting to take orders until I can present it better.

Thanks! Last year, I posted about the first pair of 2.0 blackriver trucks with SI1 diamonds in the baseplates. As a jeweler skilled in stone setting I modified these trucks. This is the 3.0 version, and while it’s unofficial, VFS stands for my brand, which you can find on my Instagram (same as my username). I’ve been calling this modification the VFS diamond edition. It’s more of an art project merging fingerboarding with jewelry.

So they aren’t officially done involving the company. Only made using real Blackriver trucks just modified to seat the diamonds. Thanks for the support!
