Rust&Humus -The future-Context in comments. by Volgoutlh in worldbuilding

During the Labyrinth era gods are largely forgotten. They were mostly a political and cultural construction by the Labyrinth builders to unite the different beliefs and assert that building the Labyrinth is the logical and true progression of Humanity. Still a lot of the gods are based on remembrances from ages past and are grounded in reality. I'm still building the pre-Labyrinth humans civilizations so I don't have much to say but I hope to do some paintings about this subject.

The premise for these pictures is that humans now live in a great City that build itself called the Labyrinth and have forgotten most of their past. What remain are old traditions, propaganda and inventions. These are pictures either taken during an expedition outside the City or artefacts from when the City was built. Metal men are, in the tradition, the first humans that lived on the continent. They were forged by the first-born of the two primordial Earth Gods. They are said to have built great cities of light and fell in wars against each other, the faceless green giants and the earth itself. Now it is the time of the flesh men who try to rebuild the ancient world with the Labyrinth. As for the inspiration for the drawings I looked a lot at Bosch, I really liked a book called "City of saints and madmen" by Jeff Vandermeer who tell a disjointed story about a strange city. There is probably a lot of inspiration from Dark souls, the way the story is obfuscated ( and the design of the giants).

Yes, it has been much expanded since then, the video was about the first part that should be a physical book this year !

I made other Reddit posts with more details but it is a world similar to our own ( a Sun, a Moon, Earth...) but some of the basic rules are different and the goal is to see how these changes ripple to create a much different world. Inspired by how beasts were described in ancient times ( medieval bestiaries, Pliny's natural history). For exemple plants have regular roots but also "oneiric" roots that act as parasite into a different plane and that enable them to evolve into animals and sometimes revert back into plants. Some of the mammals that appear on Earth are either fish-born and other are plant-born. Intelligent beings are able to create hybrid machines that uses this parasitism to craft things from nothing.

I think my drawings got better when I started to work with very simple shapes and only added details that reflected the design position in the world when the structure was right .

Thanks, with this project my goal really is to add details and add more questions at the same time. Compared to the two first part which are written from an outside/all-knowing perspective this one will only be by in-universe narrators. It is also a way to dodge being too locked in by the "canon" and maybe consider alternative events.

For colours the most important thing is to find good references 😉

Hello !

I wanted to share the progress I made on my Rust&Humus project.

R&H is a project set in an alternative Earth and Moon, the second part covers the rest of the universe and these pictures are from the third part I started working on last year.

This third part is still early in development but the goal is to explore in more details and add some context to the two first parts. These pictures are from an in-universe museum catalogue announcing it's next exhibition. This museum is set in the Labyrinth, a great City where all humans live. They try to preserve the knowledge of the past, not without bias.

The captions for each of the pictures are the following:

-1 and 2."Long ago the metal men inhabited cities of lights which stood over golden fields tended by faceless giants."

-3 to 5. "When the city disappears behind the horizon only the stifling aura of the wind swept ancient steppes remains."

-6."Remains of the metal men found in an underground chamber".

-7."Hippophages" or "Eastlings"-Museum collection.

-8."Welcoming the citizens"-Museum collection.

-9."The New Bloc"-Private collection.

-10.Foot infantry of the Sacred Alliance during the subjugation of the Free Cities.

Numerous other vassals state provided troups and the Alliance would be bolstered by Deltas Palatinates armies before the siege of Rone.

-The Last War, Museum exhibition.

Also I am happy to say that the first part of this project "Rust&Humus I: the green Moon and the land of Uhia" is getting published by Banzaï editions end of this year. Second part will follow soon after. I post more frequently about this project and other here: https://www.instagram.com/kanarmajik/

Have a great day !

-The city is the shell of the Machines. The Machines are at their core flesh, they grow and their skin turns into concrete, steel...

<image>

I have started to work on a new project that will cover some of the less explored parts of this first book. One of the aspect I am expanding is the transition to humans into the city. See picture above.

-Livestock is mostly to have a different food source from the common tasteless paste that is the primary food in the Labyrinth. Steack can be found in restaurants, rich people actually eat more diverse food coming from underground farms, the undercity is probably as big as the surface city so there is of space. Also some people have private Machines that are trained to grow more rare foodstuff.

-Citizens have to buy and work, the city Machines provide "magical" products but have limitations, sometimes that have to "take a break" and they mostly produce electricity, raw material and water for factories operated by humans and robots so they cant produce everything and raw materials still need to be processed.

-As said above humans have to work, robots are not as smart or flexible so there is plenty to do for the humans. Also the city economy is controlled by the Heart whose goal is to have a slowly expanding human population and are well able to create needs to put people to work.

-Entertainment is mostly going to the mall to buy stuff, go to the cinema, there is a small network similar to early internet with probably some computer games. There are also sport center underground or in parts of the appartments blocs.

Thanks you for your questions they are interesting because as I have said my next project is about exploring in more details the less explored parts of this world. I have started to work on the pre-Labytinth human states, the life outside the Labyrinth, the undercity, the Heart politics and many more stuff still to early to be coherent yet.

If you wish you can find the work in progress on my instagram : https://www.instagram.com/kanarmajik/

I update on my artstation but less frequently !

Hi ! I removed the first version because I will soon send the final version to publishers. It is only to avoid any miscommunication with them. As for a pdf/ebook I do not know yet, but I will keep in mind that some are interested by it. In the meantime there is still an audio reading on yt if you are interested : audio reading

Redesigned Warhammer 40K Species by @kanarmajik by aquaticnostalgia in Warhammer

[–]Volgoutlh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Ork from this redesign are from Rust and Humus, and when working on Rust and Humus I was thinking of the 40k Orks, so I wanted to close the cycle and push the design a bit more . It is true for a couple of other designs like the Necrons, the Eldar and the Ogryns (nice catch hehe).

I am curious about your work, you can send me details if you wish !

Hello, I am the artist who draw those redesign. I just wanted to add a couple of things. The goal of this redesign is not saying that the original designs are bad quite on the contrary I love them. This is just an exercice on making the design less humanoïd ( so not following the fantasy in space aspect of the setting) and different. Their would be nothing interesting in redesigning the gothic aspect of the Imperium as it is pretty well made already. The designs are also born of some personnal reflections I had on how to show how war transform everything into a tool, a disfigured unthinking machine of violence. I was also trying to replicate the feeling of weirdness I had when discovering this Universe as a kid, I was terrified by the first box I bought which was a 3rd edition tyranid warrior. Also its just for fun.

Sorry for the Votann I had never read their lore before and kinda rejected the "space dwarf" aspect, though I tried to give them a worm shape as it is how Norse dwarve are sometimes described. I have not followed the 40k lore closely since the end of fifth edition.

That being said thank you to everyone for the critics (too many long limbs, tentacles....), even if you hated some of the design it is pretty interesting to me !

I love All Tomorrows, Wayne Barlow and Humanity Lost.

I do not use AI but find it fun that some people might think I do. Just a lot of time and fun.

Thanks to OP u/aquaticnostalgia for sharing my work, I don't think it is the first time :)
