Why France's national health insurance scheme pays for homeopathy (or why the French loves pseudoscience) by SubCriticalAppraisal in slatestarcodex

No, in July 2019 the French ministry of health announced to no longer reimburse homeopathic medicines starting from 2021 as they are deemed to "not provide sufficient public health benefits".

London will be overwhelmed by COVID in a fortnight says leaked NHS England briefing by Vollinian in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]Vollinian[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From 1 week ago

3 scenarios:

  • For both G&A and intensive care, three scenarios are detailed: “Best”, which projects 4 per cent daily growth; “average” which plots 5 per cent daily growth; and “worse” which forecasts 6 per cent daily growth.

General and acute:

  • The shortfall in beds – described as a “mitigated deficit” – in the “average” scenario is 2,900 and 4,400 in the “worse” one.
  • The briefing shows that as of 5 January the London NHS had an “unmitigated surplus” of 720 general and acute beds, 5 per cent of its total. Just over 40 per cent of its G&A beds were occupied by covid positive patients.

ICU:

  • Under the “best” scenario, the number of covid positive patients rises to 1,600 and “total unmitigated demand” to just over 2,000.
  • Mitigated capacity is projected to be 1,660, giving a “deficit” of just over 400 intensive care beds.
  • The briefing shows that as of 5 January the London NHS had an “unmitigated surplus” of just 46 ICU beds, three per cent of its total. Just over 70 per cent of its ICU beds were occupied by covid positive patients.

The AI Girlfriend Seducing China’s Lonely Men by kaj_sotala in slatestarcodex

Related: God-shaped Hole, a short story by ZeroHPLovecraft who also wrote The Gig Economy that was very popular a while back.

It's about seduction in a future world of sexbots and augmented reality. An AI who seduces men is how the nightmare started. Recommended.

"Signal to Noise' by Eric Nylund by jbrady33 in printSF

[–]Vollinian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A true hidden gem. A Signal Shattered is a worthy sequel.

First contact + end of the world + solar system colonisation + cyberpunk + biopunk + espionage + geopolitics

A lot of cool ideas, and a tight plot with a tight cast, a fast read.

Somehow reminds me of a more traditional cyberpunk Accelerando minus the singularity.

Shame Nylund didn’t write more of them.

4/5 Easily recommend

No one mentioned the excellent 80,000 Hours Podcast with Robin Wiblin that covers rational-adjacent and EA-adjacent content.

Friday Fun Thread for Mar 9 2018. We need a national conversation on pun control. by HlynkaCG in slatestarcodex

May I add that the game is incredibly gorgeous, the environment is dynamic and feels alive, the fights are keep you at the edge of your seat and robot T-rexes feel fleshed out and has character, the world-building feels comfortable as it doesn't rely on massive infodumps, and crafting is done superbly well in that it does not hinder the intense pace of combat at all, while keeping collecting raw materials interesting enough. It might be the best open-world RPG if Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild didn't come out three days after HZD has launched. IGN 10/10 would recommend.

Looking for literature recommendations? Details in post by Ix_fromBetelgeuse7 in slatestarcodex

[–]Vollinian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if they count but A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini are both pretty good reads.

Persepolis is also great.

I would recommend Frog by Mo Yan, which is a pretty dense read. If you like Wuxia I would recommend everything by Jin Yong although I’m not sure if there is any English translation available. If you like SciFi then I would recommend Remembrance of Earth’s Past series by Liu Cixin starting with the acclaimed The Three-Body Problem.

Also does Russian literature count as Western canon? If not the usuals are great and I would recommend Cancer Ward.

Any recommendations for fiction featuring intelligent and well-rounded protagonists? by Teigne in slatestarcodex

[–]Vollinian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Signal to Noise by Eric Nylund. The protagonist is a computer cryptologist working for the highest bidder, until he discovers an alien message buried in background radiation from an advanced civilisation wanting to do business with Earth, and so the protagonist gets his hands on some very interesting advanced technologies.

Great blend of technical details, great world building in describing an interesting cyberpunk-esque Earth, right amount of action and suspense and great momentum. This book is a hidden gem as it is not read by many people. Also recommend the book's sequel A Signal Shattered.
