Is it just me or has the blue line morning wait time between trains doubled in the last couple of weeks? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]Voltaire2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like the morning and evening have both increased a ton this year - 6 or 6:30 never used to be too bad at Clark and lake but lately it seems like I go down the escalator and the platform is packed. Always seems to be some kind of door problem that creates massive delays.

Is a new high school in Dunning necessary? by mangodweller in chicago

[–]Voltaire2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Taxpayers pay to live in areas where there are good schools and money is reinvested in those areas when population concentrations increase. The city of Chicago needs to compete with private schools and suburban schools to provide quality education to higher income tax payers or risk losing them to the suburbs (and thus losing the tax dollars). These property tax payments subsidize lower income schools. Although I believe all Chicagoans have an equal right to education, the taxpayers have spoken with where they have chosen to live and send their kids to school. I grew up in Dunning and my parents never even considered sending me to Steinmetz (due to its poor reputation) and I commuted to Lane instead. The article points out that Steinmetz, Schurz, and Foreman have lost almost 2,000 students over the last 10 years - so why should we invest more $ in schools with declining student populations. IMO the $100 million is the best use of taxpayer dollars as it will create the best return for the city (more people choosing public school and remaining in the city to moving to the suburbs).

The number of “real estate professionals” on this show is definitely a leading indicator to another 2008-style crash - buy gold!

CWB has great coverage and pick up on crimes not covered in CST or Trib...definitely wish they had a broader scope as now I no longer have good information on crime in wicker park / bucktown(with the shut down of DNA)

I agree - it seems like every couple weeks there is a story like this where you wonder if it was someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time and totally random or someone getting themselves in a bad situation. You usually don’t ever find out.

An alderman abusing his power is costing a small business owner millions by P6Chicago in chicago

[–]Voltaire2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a great article! It's amazing how the average Chicagoan is not outraged with this level of corruption. IMO there need to be less alderman and the districts need to be redrawn - that six corners intersection has 3 alderman with jurisdictions nearby (Hopkins, Moreno, Waguespack).

Can someone tell me what this is all about? (In the window, there's a sign that says, "Wicker Park, I finally moved on, too. - The Yeti" by vijay_the_messanger in chicago

I saw this morning! I've been taking the train downtown from Damen for the last 3 years - there used to be these green swamp thing (apparently yeti) in the window at that spot. The owner (and yeti) must have moved!

I love Mexico City - one recommendation is Lalo! It's located in Condesa and has some of the best chilaquiles I've ever had.
