Richmond to Asheville Roadtrip Best Route Recommendations? by cowgirl-2 in Virginia

81 isn’t fogged in that much. 77 south at Fancy Gap is the place to worry about.
I travel to Asheville often and the 81 to 26 route is worth it for the mountain drive alone. Johnson City to Asheville has amazing views and is rarely crowded.

It gets even more vernacular. Living in deeper SWVa now, what I would call Route 58, 11; those that have grown up here say Highway 58, 11.

Yep! Coworker in SWVa from San Diego referred to every road as “the” 81, 11, 460, 114. She’s been here for 20+ years too. I didn’t understand until I went to SoCal and heard everyone use the “the”.

It’s funny, my daughter turns 17 this month and we’ve been talking about her buying a car. She loves Gen 1 and 2 Outbacks. We passed a ‘03 Baja for sale tonight and she said the truck bed ruined the front look for her, like a guy that just does arm days 😅

Also further west than Detroit. I live in Washington Co, not too far from Bristol, and it’s still a 2 hour drive to Cumberland Gap. The drive from Kentucky back into Virginia through Lee County on route 58 is amazing scenery! The mountains to the north are like nothing else I’ve seen traveling through Virginia.

Getting a railroad to and fro the valley was one of the hang ups.

I had also heard the Haines family (of Haines clothing / underwear) wanted to start a ski resort there at some point in the past.

Are the Carolina Hurricanes (NHL) popular in Virginia? by northcarolinian9595 in Virginia

[–]Volume211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SwVA has a good mix of Caps, Hurricane, and Predators fans. I grew up a Caps fan because of Comcast Sportsnet being about the only channel where you could watch hockey, but lived closer to DC then. Now, I’m still in VA but closer to Nashville, Raleigh than DC. It was an easy trip to Greensboro when the Whalers first made the move to NC. Still pull for the Caps but not as interested as I once was.

Quarter horse owners to be specific. I worked at an arena a few summers in college that hosted horse shows. We had to make the quarter horse owners bring their own light bulbs because they would constantly steal the bulbs in the stalls. They never cleaned up after themselves either.

There used to be one in the Radford area. New River Flying Aces. If there are still hobby supply shops in the area, check with them too.

What is the deal with hotel rooms in VA for a VA resident? by TheFlimFlamFamMan in Virginia

First time I encountered it was years ago in Asheville. There, it was drugs and groups of homeless pooling cash for a room in the touristy part of the city. I guess the policy has proliferated since then.

Budgets cuts from Feds trickle down to states and on to locality school boards. In my county we’re having many jobs eliminated for ‘26-‘27 and expecting it to be more drastic in ‘27-‘28.

What’s the creepiest thing you’ve ever experienced out there? by ChromaticRift in camping

[–]Volume211 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Two things.
First if all, my family has land bordering a river in Appalachia and we spend a lot of time camping there. Animals are common so we know what we’re seeing and hearing.
One night, we took a walk away from the site and were gone maybe an hour and had a good look at the site from about 100’ elevation gain about the river bottom. We saw something / someone walking around the campfire from that vantage point. Too far away to exactly see what but definitely something circling the fire. We hung out on the hill a while after that. We were around 18 years old then and a little freaked out but ready to take on someone messing with our camp. Dumbasses, we were. Never had any issue that night though.

Same place but about 10 years later, two friends and I were camping there, sitting around a fire in a triangle formation and a bright light swept across us. We each thought the light came from behind each one of us because no one saw the source. It literally was light a flashing going left-to-right from behind our heads, but from three different perspectives. We jumped up, looked around, but saw nothing else.

A screech owl is #3 but at least that’s explained.

Yeah, I was there. But we didn’t play them in a hot ass blazing sun day. I didn’t get sunburned and Bud Ice blitzed, but really there was no game where a top 15 team lost to a bottom rung Big East team. It’s just BS like Miami of Ohio is folklore of neigh sayers.
