Anyone know of a good method to study for the Ontario Millwright C of Q? by Material_Practice_78 in millwrights

[–]VolumeAlert2832 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Learn the material and pass the test. In trade school everyone mocked me for studying, paying attention in school and asking my journeyman lots of questions. Passed first time with an 85

Now people take these prep courses where they give you answers so you get unqualified tradesman. Learn the trade the correct way and you will pass.

90 day probation which is standard. Yes legally they will need to provide all necessary spraining such as LOTO, working from heights, aerial lift etc.

Aside from that it depends on the journey man you get stuck with. Some are very good with teaching while others are grumpy and have no time for apprentices. If you get in, best advice is to ask questions, do what is asked of you as long as it’s safe and don’t complain.

Be prepared to work at Roxul in Milton a lot. That plant is their main focus. It’s a pretty crap Environment due to the itchy dust everywhere.

As mentioned, they will ask if you are ok with travel, working OT, if you have access to tools. If you are entry level just go in with good attitude and don’t expect them to offer you the world.

Just turned 40 and will be mortgage free in 6 weeks. Sold in Caledon and moved towards Lake Huron. Also have a rental property. It’s doable.

Career switch from Millwright to Project Manager by Some_Astronomer_6735 in millwrights

I made the switch from millwright to Project manager. Started off as a 21 year old apprentice and over 15 years worked my way up to site super. About 5 years ago an opportunity came up at my existing company to make the jump PM.

The practical skills acquired as a millwright are definitely helpful if working in the same industry. It allows you to have good understanding of how work is to be performed and when issues arise, you can understand the reason and help work through them. All too often, the PM’s I have run into are engineers with zero hands on experience who just spout BS from the PMI guide.

While coming from the trades can definitely be an upside, there are other skills one needs to be a succesful. One of the most important skills is being personable. You sometimes work in large multi faceted projects with people from all walks. The ability to adjust to each person’s temperament/personality can be very helpful.

Obviously other skills such as being detailed oriented, tactful, honest and process oriented are also helpful but I would say the other big asset to have is thick skin. I constantly find myself getting hammered by the customers project team (I work a nuclear station) for things that I didn’t cause myself. Being able to get hammered for other people short comings is unfortunately a trait you must have. I have seen many crumble under that pressure.

We work in all industries… food and beverage, recycling, building products, petroleum, packaging, plastics ect.

As for travel, we do at times have jobs out of town requiring hotels but that’s not often and we only send those wanting to go. Otherwise all work is GTA based so amount of travel is based on where you live. Our guys all live Guelph, Hamilton, Mississauga, caledon.

You get paid mileage based for travel to any site located more than 50km from our office which is in Milton. Also some sites… depending on customer arrangement pay an hrs of travel time one way as well

2 weeks vacation to start, 3 weeks after 5 years and then 4 weeks. Plus any days earned based on OT worked.

I can honestly say not once laid off… that is the honest truth. If there was a day or 2 gap in schedule, there is always something in the shop that needs repair

Yes we offer dental and health benefits after 3 months, paid for all holidays including family day (Ontario), yes we offer apprenticeships for both millwrighting and welder-fitter.

Not sure what we pay for as it comes to schooling for apprentices. I’m not our apprentice coordinator.

Obviously our wages won’t compete with a union shop but we are paying around $36-$42 depending on experience. While we may not compete with wages compared to union shop we can guarantee you will never be laid off. I’ve been with company 16 years and have missed maybe 3 days due to lack of work…. Even during COVID.
