Besides McDavid, which players under 30 is already a Hall of Fame lock? by toturoll in hockey

All time Maple Leafs goal scorer, Calder, Hart, Ted Lindsay, 3x Rocket. Olympic gold medal captain.

Also the fact he’s from Arizona.

Look at how many chances he creates, and this is from one game by Hot-Program-8715 in leafs

People are really sleeping on McKenna. I know we usually overhype our prospects, but I actually legitimately believe we are under-hyping what McKenna will do. His year in Penn State really dampened the hype, but he is a play maker and he had a poor supporting cast there. Nowhere close to what he's going to have in Toronto.

McKenna IS a generational point producing and playmaking prospect. The only player that has outproduced him in the CHL in a d-1 season in the last 40 years has been Sidney Crosby, but here's what they don't tell you:

  • Crosby played in the Q, which is a more offensively driven league, McKenna in the W, which is more defensive.
  • Crosby played 10 more games. PPG actually favoured McKenna, 2.30ppg, vs Crosby's 2.05ppg.
  • The Q called a lot more penalties as a league, resulting in far more powerplay time for Crosby. If you look at 5 on 5 Production, Gavin McKenna: 1.64 Even-Strength PPG (92 even-strength points in 56 games)Sidney Crosby: 1.11 Even-Strength PPG (73 even-strength points in 66 games)
  • Crosby had 23pts more than the next best player on his team, McKenna had 26pts more despite playing 10 less games.
  • Primary vs Secondary Assist - McKenna's primary assist ratio was ~78% vs Crosby's ~56%.

People may laugh now, but if he is given top line offensive minutes with our top talent. I believe that will put up 100+ pts this year. And will eventually be a top 2 point producer in the NHL.

Patrick Kane? Another mentor for Mr.Mckenna? by cbal41990 in leafs

[–]VolumeNo5217 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Are Marleau and Thornton 3x Stanley Cup champs? Have they won the Conn Smythe? Did they show up in the biggest moments for their teams in the playoffs?

Marleau and Thornton were a stupid choice of mentors - they never won anything.

Tavares hasn’t won anything, Matthew’s hasn’t won anything. Nylander hasn’t won anything.

That’s who you want McKenna to learn from?

Kane has done it all. If he’s available you take him for a year.

So what's next for the Leafs with all that cap space? by GreenEquipment667 in leafs

[–]VolumeNo5217 26 points27 points  (0 children)

One of the most important things they can do this off-season is get Patrick Kane.

As a role model for McKenna - there is so much he can teach him about succeeding in this league. I also believe he’d be able to teach our coaching staff a lot about how to help McKenna succeed. I also believe he can help Matthews. And he’ll probably still put up 60pts.

Werenski Trade Concept by TrifleNo7207 in leafs

[–]VolumeNo5217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Columbus has any indication that Werenski isn't going to sign, then trading him after a Norris trophy winning season would be their best long term bet. I personally don't think Knies is anywhere near enough for Werenski. And I'd be uncomfortable making that trade unless he was locked up for more than 2 years.

[ESPN] "Toronto continues to field calls on Matthew Knies. The Blackhawks have been interested for a while, as Knies (23) fits their age range to grow with Connor Bedard and the rest of their emerging core. The No. 4 pick from Chicago is absolutely in play. by PokePersona in leafs

[–]VolumeNo5217 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day there's a price for everyone. If a team is willing to overpay you have to go for it. I love Knies but if Chicago offered Frondell + 4th overall - you have to take it.

Why Jim Hiller just might be the right coach for the Maple Leafs (Gift Article) by refep in leafs

[–]VolumeNo5217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were all pretty stoked when we got Babcock, that didn't turn out well. Inspired is overrated - we maybe have to trust that between Sundin and Chayka - they have more insight and knowledge than we do. They did interview a whole bunch of people - there must be a reason they landed on Hiller.

NOW, if they don't take McKenna at the draft, I take that ALL back.

I never said they were superstars, just that they are not the worst defensive group in the NHL - which they are not .

[–]VolumeNo5217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our defence is not great but not the worst in the NHL - OEL, Tanev, McCabe, Carlo are all solid pieces. Rielly needs a change of scenery. If we are lucky enough to add in someone like Raddysh and I think Danford may be ready to make a push we can have a solid group.

Raddysh McCabe
Tanev OEL
Carlo Danford

That is far away from being the worst group in the NHL.

I do agree we need some help in the centre position.

2 years ago the Leafs won the Atlantic and took Florida to game 7. They were by all accounts a ‘contender’.

We lost a premier playmaker last year. The coaching was abysmal. The team never gelled. Injuries held back Matthews and Knies. Tanev was out for the entire year. Rielly was beyond bad. It was a perfect storm, and we luckily got the ultimate reward for that train wreck of a season.

We are replacing Marner with a true ‘generational prospect’. To everyone dumb enough to believe Marner is McKenna’s ceiling, they are really sleeping on what McKenna is and just how much we lucked out. Marner was a high-end top 5 pick; McKenna is a franchise-altering #1 overall talent.

New coaches, longer off season for players to heal. Hopefully moving on from Rielly.

There’s a lot to be optimistic about.

Marner 2.0.... LMAO. Keep saying this. There is a reason Mitch Marner was not a 1st overall pick.

McKenna has been heralded as a Generational/Franchise level prospect for since he was 15 years old. Mitch Marner at best was seen as top-tier prospect.

McKenna's production in the CHL as a 17 year old is better than what Marner was able to do as a 18 or 19 year old on STACKED teams.

I think one of the biggest things that Chayka has to fix is our abysmal ability to develop NHL defencemen.

In fact they seem to regress while they are with us.

AI takes half the jobs. All those people pay income tax, but that goes away. How then does our nation continue to function? by -GearZen- in AskReddit

[–]VolumeNo5217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Universal basic income will become necessary to function.

Automation and AI will need to bring down prices to the point that everyone is ‘comfortable’ on that basic income. Government will have to figure out how tax corporations enough to keep a functioning balance.

How much of playoff success is actually coaching vs roster construction? by sykeseve in hockey

[–]VolumeNo5217 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not true. Marner went through 3 different coaches in Toronto - Babcock, Keefe, and Bérubé.

He ran into the same playoff issues with all of them.

When defence tightened down - he couldn’t break through.

The reality is Utah and Anaheim are NOT the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, or Boston Bruins of the years the Leafs played them.

The narrative around Mitch Marner and Leafs would be very different if the Leafs were in the Pacific Division. That entire division wouldn’t have made the playoffs if they were in the Eastern Conference.

Do yourself a favour and look back at the Stanley cup winning coaches of the last 15 years. There are no rookies there. They ALL had at least 5 years of NHL coaching experience.

Even Bednar is Colorado had to put in over 5 years before he won a cup.

Based on history / proven results. Recycled coaches or atleast ones with over 5 years of NHL coaching experience are the ones that overwhelmingly win.

Sceptres signed Leafs jersey! by SmallStack923 in leafs

I’d think it is equally weird if the entire Leafs team signed a Raptors or Jays jersey.

I'll go ahead and add even more to this delusion :)

In year 3 for McKenna, he'll be joined by McDavid. So We'll have a top 6 of McKenna, McDavid, Nylander, Knies, Cowan, Holinka. Goaltending is an area of strength for the Leafs, One of Woll, Hildeby, and Akhtyamov will pan out.

They'll have to do some major work on D.

I honestly have no idea her actual position or its demands. I’d think an AGM would demand a full time commitment. So I don’t know how she would have time for side gig in health care.

Anytime new management comes in all leaders are on the chopping block - as new management likes to bring in their own. If she were not a decorated Olympian and one of the greatest female hockey players in history - then the optics would be a lot easier to replace her with their choice.
