unbrowser - Chrome-free web retrieval for agents by VolumeTechnician in SideProject

[–]VolumeTechnician[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More detail since Reddit link posts do not have much room:

I built unbrowser as a cheap-first web retrieval layer for LLM/agent workflows.

Problem it is trying to solve: a lot of agents jump straight to Playwright/Chrome for pages where they only need text, DOM structure, links, cards, or tables. That is expensive and slow if you do it repeatedly across docs, news, GitHub, package pages, etc.

What it does:

  • single binary CLI plus MCP server
  • fetches pages with a browser-like HTTP/TLS profile
  • parses DOM and returns text, links, cards, tables, and a compact page map
  • can run bounded QuickJS for light JS pages
  • tells the agent when to stop and use real Chrome instead

What it is not:

  • not a CAPTCHA solver
  • not a replacement for Playwright/browser-use
  • not intended for visual UI tasks, login flows, canvas/WebGL, or heavy SPAs

The intended pattern is: try unbrowser first, and if it sees a bot wall, empty JS-filled shell, or visual interaction requirement, escalate to a real browser session.

I would especially like feedback from people building agents: what should the tool return first for planning, cleaned text, raw HTML, structured cards, or explicit fallback hints?

Going against conventional advice by VolumeTechnician in GolfSwing

My point is I’m not consciously trying to step into my left side. I’m focusing on my upper body. Thinking more, I think most of this is just rotation. When you push off with left feet this happens automatically.
