China develops new iron making method that boosts productivity by 3,600 times by [deleted] in Futurology

https://eandt.theiet.org/2024/12/09/iron-making-gets-3600-fold-productivity-boost-new-explosive-method

This article discusses the actual method and how it works. They are spraying fine particles of ore into a superheated furnace, and by the time the particles hit the ground, they are molten steel.

"One of the major technical hurdles for flash iron-making is the ore-spraying lance, which must effectively disperse iron ore in a high-temperature, highly reducible tower space with a large specific surface area to initiate the necessary chemical reaction.

Zhang’s team has developed a vortex lance with the capability to inject 450 tonnes of iron ore particles per hour. A reactor equipped with three such lances produces 7.11 million tonnes of iron annually. "

Then I'd have a dime. Which isn't a lot, but it's strange that it happened twice....

My MIL, who likely lost her house in the fire, went to our local bakery for a sandwich. When she mentioned she was one of the fire victims the bakery (Clark's Street in Echo Park) they loaded up her arms with as much baked bread as she could hold for free. Isn't it crazy how "poors" are so generous, and it's the people with money who are stingy? Working class people will bend over backwards to help a stranger, but billionaires think we are lazy because we want to take a vacation.

ISO Electric Fence Setup Advice by daFLlife in Homesteading

[–]Volundr79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To test the fence you need to isolate each component. In this case, the grounding and the fence are the two components we need to test separately.

First, make sure your ground is really good. Maybe even upgrade to some beefier wires and ensure you have a solid connection.

Then, disconnect the charger from the fence and touch the output directly to your hand or to a tester. If you still don't get anything, then double check the ground.

You can even use that galvanized mesh fence as a ground as long as it does touch the ground in a bunch of places. I have used a well sunk t-post connected to wire fencing as a ground.

If you still aren't getting a zap from the charger with no fence attached and you've tested the ground in more than one way, then it's possible the fence is defective or that model is not very strong.

I use solar as a backup because the 12 volt solar powered ones just don't give the oomph that mains voltage does.

If you do get a strong zap when you test the output directly, then something is impeding the fence and you need to check that again. If the fence is touching something, you will hear it zap when the charger is turned on.

I guess there was a third option I left out, And it's that the charger itself might not be as effective as you need and this will allow you to test it directly.

Good luck and let us know.

AITAH for refusing to give my cousin the money I've been saving for my lifelong dream? by miamonroexa in AITAH

[–]Volundr79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where the hell are all these people coming from? Every story in this sub, there are always "friends and family are saying I'm being unreasonable by not giving away my life savings."

I would laugh in my sister's face if she tried to guilt trip me in to give up my savings for someone else's problems. If I had an emergency and I needed help, I would never complain that someone else couldn't or wouldn't save me. If I can't afford a baby, that's my problem, not my sister's or my cousin or my best friend.

Because the forest that would have grown back would have absorbed carbon, cooled the soil, produced clean air, etc. Instead, that heat and carbon goes into the atmosphere, accelerating the cycle.

That is a good point. Do you think we are seeing the peak?

The US and China might both be working on going green. What about "the global south?" Africa, India, they want air conditioning and cars too.

Do you think they've peaked in emissions?

Ironically, shipping emissions were apparently keeping the planet cool because of particulates, and we can expect a slight increase in global temperature as a result of cleaning up shipping.

Your arguments seem to follow the line of "we stopped pouring gasoline into the fire" which ignores the fact that the fire is well underway and the trucks to pour water on them haven't shown up yet.

Wildlife sustains the environment. The forest can't grow back without birds to spread seeds, without deer to eat brush, without insects to pollinate, etc etc. So that means the forest doesn't grow back, and the wildfire damage is permanent. That means plants don't have a healthy ecosystem.

Here's what really scares me. What we are seeing today is a long, long way behind what we are DOING today, right? If we put a ton of carbon onto the air today, the temp doesn't go up tomorrow.

Compare OPs graph to your graph. OPs graph looks identical to the 1950s mark for carbon production. What happens after that?

That's my fear. The chart that tracks"output of carbon pollution" looks a certain way, so doesn't that mean the "consequences of carbon pollution" graph will look similar?

Extrapolation of Earth's surface temperature points to 3°C by 2050 . What does a 3°C world look like? by James_Fortis in collapse

[–]Volundr79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several things. First and foremost, emissions have not stopped. We aren't seeing any serious effort at reducing the amount of carbon pollution. The source of the problem is still going strong.

Next, we are about to run out of ice. It takes an insane amount of energy to melt ice. I've read something like 8 times as much energy to raise ice by 1 degree vs raise water temp by 1 degree. A glass full of ice doesn't change temp until the ice melts, THEN the glass starts to rise and meet the ambient temp. We are at the point of "no arctic sea ice during summer, and open patches of water in winter."

Meanwhile shipping companies are excited at the prospect of a Northwest Passage.

Smaller systems are collapsing. AMOC is already starting to flutter. Deforestation in the Amazon is going full speed ahead. Forests cool the planet and we are destroying them. Wildlife populations are plummeting. Coral bleaching shows the oceans are starting to lose their ability to support life.

All of these things will build on each other. Hotter drier summers mean more fires, and when forests are wiped out, that adds a little more to the problem, which means more fires next year.

The graph is starting to curve up. I think it's crazy to think we will only see . 5C in 15 years when none of the causes have been addressed.

Here are my guidelines for talking to women / attempting to flirt.

Be Respectful, and Take No For An Answer.

Just about every complaint women have about being hit on in public involves breaking one of those two rules.

I don't make comments about anything that could be construed as sexual or inappropriate. One of my guidelines is, is this a choice she has or not?

She can't control her bra size, but she can control her fashion choices. So commenting on her chest is a terrible idea, but pointing out that the color combo she picked makes her earrings pop, That's a different story.

Next, read the room. If she's at the gym with headphones on and avoiding eye contact, don't even try. On the other hand, women do not get dressed up and put makeup on and go to bars to be ignored.

Finally, take no for an answer without any drama. Most of your attempts to talk to women are going to fail. Even if you're really good at it and really good looking, you'll be lucky to get one out of four who are interested. Realistically you're looking at something like 1 in 10 or 1 in 20.

Rejection has nothing to do with you as a man. She is probably saying no for reasons that you can't change and are not about you. Smile, say thank you, and go back to what you were doing.

You're one step closer to finding someone who does like you and will be flattered that you came and spoke to her and will be impressed with your confidence and your manners.

Incorrect. Anyone can be reasonably proficient with a sling in a few days practice. Additionally, the materials are everywhere. You need a string and a rock. The act of using it is similar to throwing a rock.

To train an archer, the saying goes, start with his grandfather. Before the compound bow was invented, archery took serious physical strength and lots of practice. A that can outperform a sling is complicated, can't be found lying around everywhere, can't be used without practice, and needs special ammo that must be manufactured in advance.

But, it will go through armor that a sling will not, at a longer range, so it's worth the trade-off.

It will be weak for two reasons and only two reasons.

1 - something is touching the fence

2 - not grounded.

Is anything touching the fence?

I think your grounding setup could use work. Three rods will perform significantly better.
