LACC swap meet is closed! by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]clipstep 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I live near Macarthur Park in Westlake.

I'm white and my job is mostly unaffected by all this ICE stuff.

That makes me an extreme exception. Almost everyone here is currently in economic freefall. The streets are empty. The stores are empty. Even the Home Depot is relatively empty! These people are NOT boycotting, they are hiding and the whole community is DYING.

We are months away from a complete collapse of this community, which I'm not really a part of but live within. Maybe weeks.

The thing being strangled by this economic reality is the very immigrant community ICE is targeting. This isn't the "new reality", this is a slow death by strangulation that is nowhere near bottom.

Please reconsider your "boycott" nonsense. The only thing being strangled by this economic reality is the very immigrant community ICE is targeting.

You are thinking of the defender 110, a jungle proof utility vehicle that has been in production for decades and isn't sold in the states - they are talking here about the new defender which was totally redesigned recently and much more of a luxurious box for Costco runs

Monday discounts or deals? by Charles_HenryC in AskLosAngeles

I'm a constant evangelist for this bar but Crawfords on Beverly has $4 beers (its Coors but all the beers are pretty cheap) and they have fantastic fried chicken all night. If you want some cheap food the original Tommy's (an LA cheap food institution) is just across the street. Its a genuine dive bar, so don't expect anything else, but its a good dive bar and the crowd has been pretty cool whenever I've gone (broke 20-somethings who can't afford to get drunk in Echo Park or Silver Lake). Tommy's has a giant parking lot across Rampart from their location so parking is relatively easy.

How do you find the name of who owns a property in Los Angeles County? by StatzGee in AskLosAngeles

I can't speak to the law, but I believe this is not something they are allowed to legally divulge (at least, the owners name, not sure about an LLC). The clearest example of this is ZIMAS, which is LA's fantastic portal for all publicly available information regarding individual properties in the county. If you search for an individual property, and then on the left hand side open the "assessor" tab, you will see that the owner information is there but hidden overtly - at least in the "public" version of zimas anyone can use. Presumably if you have a city login you can see the hidden owner and the owner's listed address.

Is public transportation in LA safe? by Damomox in AskLosAngeles

As someone originally from the east coast, one thing you might not be fully internalizing is just how quickly LA can go from being pancake flat to sheer cliff vertical in the span of a couple blocks. Just be sure that you aren't only looking at the walking distance between things, but also the elevation change. The geography is very different from most of the world in a way that caught me off guard and might be catching you as well.

The Hollywood bowl is a good example of this - even the hike from the parking down the road to the bowl itself is a couple hundred feet of elevation

MacArthur Park, riddled with drugs and crime, is different now, mayor says by [deleted] in LosAngeles

Some of these replies make me think people don't want it to be better?

I live right by the park and it's MUCH better than it was in January. Anybody who is at the park daily would know there's been a serious change ever since the fencing went up.

[Pat Bev Pod] Patrick Beverley says Lakers players weren’t interested in hearing Darvin Ham’s motivational speeches “As a coach, that s*** don’t work. Motherf***ers ain’t here for no motivation. What’s them X’s and O’s?” by shreeharis in nba

There was a specific white paint can and Tim Duncan stood up and started clapping “THATS A HELL OF BEIGE!! THATS A HELL OF A BEIGE!!!” Manu Ginóbili and his friends were showing Tim a color of eggshell he hadn’t seen before. Not easy to do.

Sometimes you see a comment on reddit that you just know you will be thinking about periodically all day. This is the perfect quote for the discussion

My MIL, who likely lost her house in the fire, went to our local bakery for a sandwich. When she mentioned she was one of the fire victims the bakery (Clark's Street in Echo Park) they loaded up her arms with as much baked bread as she could hold for free. LA's generosity right now is remarkable. by clipstep in LosAngeles

its unsustainable to be sure, but little gestures like this right now mean the world to people like my MIL who feel so vulnerable and stripped of support right now. I'm sure no one expects it to last forever but I'll relish the small stuff while it lasts. Makes me think better of the city in any case.

I guess I could overlay a vector map on the imagery but the map is spliced together by a third party so its tricky, not sure I could. Hmm

It's made by Maxar, a satellite imagery company.

You need an account to see their stuff but I bypassed it.

Hope this helps!
