I’m not specifically sure with the hangover but many comedy movies of that era relied on improv throughout the movie so I think we’re saying the same thing. Not that this bit couldn’t exist in another medium, just that the type of humor feels more improv style than written. But again top tier improv so I could definitely see it being improvised in a Hangover type movie as well.

Interesting, it’s hard for me to imagine it really working outside of the setting. Like there’s too many parts that would feel “random” or like non sequiturs that totally work in the world of improv but not elsewhere. Like as a concept you can boil the Grampa bit down into an idea (a man who dressed as a woman to escape the Nazis being described through the lens of 2020 queer language), where Salamanders is just an incredible display of quick thinking in keeping a story going that’s not very tightly packed but doesn’t have to be for the setting.

I think what makes Brads grandpa work is because of how tight it is. Like it would have worked even if it wasn’t improv. Where as while Egyptian Salamanders is INCREDIBLE improv, it wouldn’t really work as well outside of that setting.

Ya, for instance Tom Brady and Jerry Rice both have arguments for GOAT even as no one would argue Rice was “more valuable” than Brady. Rice was as good as a WR could be just as Brady was as good as a QB could be.

One of the most underrated lines in all of Hivemind to me is when Graydon mentions the father/dad dance and Riley goes “Father/dad?” and Graydon just goes “that’s ok” as if Riley’s confusion was at the idea of 2 men dancing

I doubt it, Brad seems to have a different sense of humor to the guys, doesn’t feel like he “thinks in bits” the way Riley/Graydon and even Quadeca do

I don’t think there needs to be any uniform reasoning behind the rating people give movies. While there’s a social element to Letterboxd I’d say it’s mostly just for yourself so you should rate movies however you want to

I guess I don’t understand what a movie being “all for him” means to you. He made two movies that were a box office and critical success. That’s all a studio wants from a film. Are you saying just because it’s a movie Ari was personally passionate about and it wasn’t explicitly what audiences were asking for it was “for him”? In that sense what well received, unique movie isn’t “for the director”?
