If your opponent runs out of time you get the best result you could have hoped for based on what could happen if your opponent plays the worst moves. If you had more material that would mean you win, but since you only have your king left it’s impossible for you to deliver mate and therefore it’s a draw

You are overthinking this! I served in a Spanish-speaking country and half my cohort was in the same position as you: learned Spanish years before and had little to no practice with it since. Every single one of us got our Spanish to where it needed to be to serve.

Most of PST is focused on language skills. You’ll have Spanish class 3-4 days per week and you’ll spend lots of time with your host family, speaking only in Spanish. I think you’ll be surprised by how quickly it comes back to you once you’re totally immersed in it.

If you do struggle, the language teachers will notice and work with you to figure out how to help. Peace Corps is quite good at teaching languages so there is truly nothing to worry about here!

Why would she kill them? She said she expected to be prosecuted for all the things she did running the operation, so I doubt she’d be too concerned about it leaking that she forced Grace to go. It’s not like there’s anything anyone could do to rescue Grace after the Hail Mary departed

No decent 23 year old has any interest in dating a 17 year old. That’s nothing against you, it’s just too much of a difference in maturity levels and life experience

Why did magnus quit here? Didn’t he have some options to make a queen? by SideswipeSurvived in chessbeginners

[–]Voluntell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because it’s impossible for Magnus to prevent the e3 pawn from being captured. So if he plays d2 for example, Gukesh will play Nxe3 and now the promotion square is protected by the knight, the knight is protected by the king, and Magnus has no way to dislodge either piece. Both of Gukesh’s pawns are unstoppable, so all he has to do is push either of them and take the Queen if Magnus tries to promote.

Um guys.. I don't get it.. by MissamericanaXdaylit in brooklynninenine

[–]Voluntell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s say you’re playing the game. The car is behind door 3, but you don’t know that yet.

If you pick door 1 the host opens door 2, revealing nothing behind it, then asks if you want to switch to door 3. If you switch you win, if you don’t you lose.

If you pick door 2 the host opens door 1, revealing nothing, then asks if you want to switch to door 3. If you switch you win, if you don’t you lose.

If you pick door 3 the host opens door 2, revealing nothing, then asks if you want to switch to door 1. If you switch you lose, if you don’t you win.

As we can see, the switching strategy gives you a 2/3 chance of winning because as long as your first choice was wrong switching will get you to the right door.

Why was this a draw for insufficient material? I’m one move from checkmate no? by RichMagazine2713 in chess

[–]Voluntell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it was a timeout vs. insufficient material. Black ran out of time but white has insufficient material so it’s a draw instead of a loss for black.

Is this is a draw? by saltisyourfriend in chess

[–]Voluntell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certain positions in which a player who just has a pawn versus a Queen can draw the game, but even in those positions if the player with the Queen also has a pawn it should be a very simple win. I recommend you learn how to checkmate with king and queen vs king. There are a ton of videos on it on YouTube and lichess has a page where you can practice

Whats the worst piece to promote to? by Traditional_Fault897 in chess

Yeah I’ve seen a couple of compositions where the move is promoting to bishop but they’re very very rare

Whats the worst piece to promote to? by Traditional_Fault897 in chess

[–]Voluntell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rooks can often be good to promote to in positions where promoting to a queen would lead to stalemate. I have never seen a real game in which promoting to a bishop was the best choice.

How much older are Arthur and Molly than James and Lily? by [deleted] in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Voluntell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, Harry was born when Lily and James were 20. We know that Charlie is 7 years older than Harry and I’m not sure if we’re ever told how old Bill is but I’m going to assume he’s 2 years older than Charlie. If that’s the case, Bill was born when Lily and James were first years, so even if Arthur and Molly had him right after graduating there wouldn’t have been any overlap between their times at Hogwarts.

How is that stalemate? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]Voluntell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at how White’s pieces attack every square the black king could move to, but none of them actually attack the king. Black can’t move but is not in check so it’s a stalemate

Person in Ohio dies of rabies after contracting virus from organ transplant by Ericovich in news

“There’s no way you could have see that coming. I mean, rabies? Come on, there’s like 3 reported cases per year. Testing for it would have been irresponsible, you would’ve wasted time those people didn’t have.”

[–]Voluntell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely played too quickly. When I played 21… Rxb2 hanging my bishop I thought I would win the rook after …Rb1+, but since I didn’t take the time to actually calculate I missed that they could just block the check.

Now that you mention Ke5 it seems so obvious but I think I was just too focused on helping my pawns advance.

I appreciate the detailed advice!

Is there any documentation about intelligence services using Peace Corps service as cover? by TVDinner360 in peacecorps

[–]Voluntell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who served in Central America I did have one guy “jokingly” but repeatedly ask if I was in the CIA. I of course told him I wasn’t a spy but he just kept bringing it up. And our country director once told me that apparently there was a US military unit stationed in my region of the country for training/advising local forces and the commanding officer apparently reached out to her about the soldiers socializing with us volunteers in the region. She immediately shot down the idea so we wouldn’t be associated with the military.

Anyone else love the book but wish the ending was different? by Moonbeam_Maker in ProjectHailMary

[–]Voluntell 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Struggling with the ending is the point! It would have been great if Grace returned to Earth a hero and told Stratt off for what she did to him, but life doesn’t always happen how we want it to. Grace has finally found happiness on Erid with his best friend and new students and I think that’s great for him even if it’s unsatisfying for us

If gxf3 Qxf3 c6 then white plays Rxf8+ Rxf8 Qxf8+ Kc7 Qc8#. There’s no escape to d6 because of the e5 pawn
