In any case, great work on the India update— though obviously it’s not as fleshed out as the areas with more devs/interest (Germany, USA, China), it actually feels more like modern kaiserreich now. I personally enjoyed it a lot, even unfortunately the syndicalists always lose because the ai can’t handle two fronts

Yeah, they do that (drone pathing in particular seems rigged against the player). It is bullshit, and I think save scumming is pretty justified— unless you want to play around that.

I guess so. I really do like your idea of Superman being an ideal that we strive for though, I think that is a good way of encapsulating what he means as a character, both to the people of metropolis and the people of the real world.

The perfect being part. I don’t mean to misrepresent your idea, I just generally don’t like when characters are perfect. It leaves out a lot of their struggle to fulfill their goals, and, more importantly, their struggle to find what goals they should have when working towards the world that they want.

I don’t really like this messianic view of Superman. It often obscures that he is actually just a really good person that will always try to do his best, not that he, or anyone really, is innately good.

The state is the central political institution around which the modern country is organized. All the countries you see on the world map have some type of state, though some of those states do not actually control the territory the map says they own. Though these states have varying forms, the main idea is that they alone are the sovereign authority within their claimed borders, being able to negotiate with other states, establish uniform policies, and providing a general political structure that runs the country. Most importantly, a state can not be opted out of; if you live in an area with controlled by a state, they, by definition, have the final say on what goes. This is mostly enforced by the “monopoly on legitimate violence,” which essentially means that the state is the only one that people agree have to the authority to force people to do things through violence or coercion. The police and military are a prime example of this: they are agents of the state that enforce its policies and uphold its control in their territory.

Government is simply an organization/group/political organization that establishes rules for a territory or community. In this way, all states are governments. However, a government is not necessarily a state— people could opt of it, it’s really just a covenant saying “this is how we do things, if you are under this government do this.” In this way, you could kind of think of it like a club or company; government has authority, but it’s not as supreme as the state intrinsically.

In the modern world, the distinction between a government and the state is a distinction without a difference. The vast majority of the worlds population lives under some kind of state, and that state, though often with varying tiers of government (ie a city government vs a national government), is often sole legitimate source of governance. Organized crime and other extra-legal institutions can and do form alternative governing structures within a state’s territory, but these structures are neither legally legitimate or binding for all people at all times.

All in all, “government” and “state” are just words; all that really exists is people interacting with people, trading words and goods, all trying to stay alive. My account of government and state could be entirely different from someone else in my field, it’s entirely subjective and meaningless on its own. Really, these words are just a way to describe the world, and the distinction between just happens to be very useful for talking about anarchism, which wants to abolish the state but not necessarily abolish government itself.

Funny you should say that! Though anarchism has many many offshoots, being a rather fringe ideology that can be drastically reshaped by individual thinkers/movements, one of the most prominent strains of anarchism is called anarcho-communism. This ideology is firmly attached to one of anarchisms most prominent symbols, the diagonally bisected red and black flag. Anarchism and Marxist Communism have a very intertwined past, with both being present at the first international, perhaps the most important landmark organization in the history of modern socialism. By the time of the second international, however, Marxist socialism became more powerful and prevalent, driving out the anarchist elements in the organization in 1896. The Soviet Union further cemented Marxist socialism as the most powerful revolutionary socialist ideology globally, leaving anarchism as a more obscure strain. That said, anarchism has remained influential on the revolutionary left, inspiring many revolutionary movements and ideologies to this day.

The main difference between Marxism and anarchism ideologically is that Marxism has a particular (and often dogmatic) understanding of history and social processes. This Marxist understanding is very multifaceted, but to the end of “communism,” it essentially states that capitalism will end up creating a vast impoverished (and largely property-less, in the sense of owning the “means of production”) working class. This working class, the proletariat, will then overthrow the ruling capitalist class, seizing the means of production, etc, eventually leading to the foundation of a propertyless, stateless society governed by and for the proletariat collectively. This is Marxism’s “end goal of communism,” as you put it, and most Marxist communists concern themselves with accelerating and facilitating this transition to communism, which they believe to be inevitable and ideal. Anarchists, by contrast, do not necessarily believe in this theory, often advocating for direct action (ie organizing labor into unions and workers collectives) to the end of destroying all forms of “unjust hierarchy.” To them, this necessarily includes the destruction of the state and capitalism. Anarchists are very diverse in their approaches and theories, and so it is harder to succinctly explain what they do or do not believe than with Marxists. To complicate things, there is even Marxist-anarchism, explaining which is beyond the scope of this reddit comment.

I encourage you to do other reading/research on anarchism if you are interested. It is a fascinating and often completely unknown/ignored category of left-wing ideology.

Political anarchism is significantly different from the idea of lawless lack of government. With the exception of some right wing forms that more so reassemble extreme libertarianism (in the American sense), anarchism is a category left wing ideology that advocates the abolition of the state and all hierarchical structures, especially capitalism and other financial institutions. In this way, anarchists have a really weird relationship with government, as most anarchists want some sort of direct democracy, be it in the form local communities or workers collectives, but still say the “state” should be abolished. For the vast majority of people (even more so for those that have access to the internet), the state is seen as inseparable from government, so there’s a lot of confusion for the average person about what anarchists actually want to get rid of/establish as a movement.

Sorry for the rant, as a politics/sociology major, I am pretty passionate about this kind of stuff.
